"Building your own"...
I only go that route because I have old drives that I want to reuse...

BTW, anyone know if there's a solution out there where you can remote query the enclosed drive's health? AKA remote SMART monitoring or somesuch?

As I mentioned to someone else before. One site you can keep a daily eye on is www.dealsea.com. They list one-time web deals on different items, many of them electronics items. Also, look thru www.pricewatch.com if you want to find the best deal right there on the spot because you want someone right then.

If someone wants to bust me for posting links, well blah... I'm just helping the guy out. =)

http://www.memorylabs.net/200gb7200rpm1.html

They have 160gig USB for 85$, 200gig USB for 105$, and 250gig USB for 115$.

Figured I'd be nice and provide you with a starting point. =)

so are these any differences between getting an external hd and getting an internal one and then putting it into an enclosure???
aznduk, only differences would be the features of the enclosure. Other than that, the result is the same. You can get USB enclosures (empty) for 3.5" and 2.5" hard drives for 30$ or less all over the place.

And the 2.5" enclosures usually power the drive thru the USB port, so there is only one cable. Alot of the 3.5" enclosures have additional features and require an external power cord. Just remember the additional power draw if you use it on battery.
