HP nx6110 questions regarding an aquisition

Hello to everyone. This is going to be a long post, bear with me please.

The product in question is HP nx6110. I would be interested in buying such a laptop model since I am in dire need of taking my work with me wherever I go.

Here are some links to the product:
Link 1
Link 2

The latter is closer to the real thing it's from the firm I want to buy it. It's in Romanian but the technical specs are understandable. The main difference from the above link is that it also has a DVD-RW instead of the stock DVD/CD-RW.

The specs from HP can be found here. They are in PDF format. It appears that it does have some problems, I am aware of the fan issue, however it don't find it that disturbing at a first glance. At as I understand, HP laptops are very well built in comparison to similar products in the same price range... by all means correct me if I'm wrong.

For those who want to know more about this, or haven't heard about these problems yet, can find a link here.

By searching various forums I was also able to gather some "intel" about laptops in general, so let me share with you this cool link. It's a video tutorial from IBM regarding various hardware manipulation of the laptop so to speak

Well, the question is the following - is it worth buying? What if I upgrade its memory with a 512 dimm? Does it also work to buy one that works at 400 MHZ, or should I stick with the 333 Mhz ones? I am not sure whether this speed is supported by the motherboard but since the processor's bus speed is 400 Mhz...

What type of memory would you advise me to buy - Kingmax or Geil?

And lastly I would like to say what I would be using it for - work mostly (network administration, programming, web development). Battery life, sound quality are not an issue. The screen is not very important, but it should be pretty usable (with the type of activities listed above) in mind. Most importantly how well is it built - since I will be carrying with me very much.

Well, this is it. Any advice is welcome.

PS: Do not tell me to try and raise some more money, I would prefer an advice within the 675-700 euros (the equivalent of 780-830 US $) price range since I am a student and cannot afford to pay more than this... maybe just a little stretch if there is a better option.

Well, unless anyone says something which is bound to change my mind for good, this week I'm going to buy it. I'll come back with a full review for those who have in mind a relatively inexpensive laptop in mind, but built to last.

I got it! I'll come back soon with some tests and with a link to http://www.linuxlaptops.com, where I'll post a comprehensive tutorial on how to set up and optimize your free operating system for this laptop model.

In short - I am very satisfied with it, the fan issue in my humble optinion is not really an issue (at least for me), since my desktop computer sounds like a plane while it is on . By comparison, the laptop is a pussycat.

The LCD monitor is great in console mode, and with a few tweaks (regarding what fonts programs use) it becomes easy on the eyes. The font thing is an optimization of /etc/X11/XF86Config or /etc/X11/xorg.conf, depending on your setup, by adding your preferred fonts in there.
This is somewhat like the equivalent of the Clear type fonts in Windows I think. Note that you may have to tell the programs you usually use to change the default settings for fonts, using one of those selected by you and saving the settings for future use.

The "not so good" part - I still have to work and tweak the LCD for correct display of colours. It is not for movies, or any fast display usage, mind you. For office use, it's excellent. The static display is pretty good, I think, but the colors have too much Gamma in them, I may have to adjust the levels manually. In any event, it is not very close to the actual colours, so any such activity (i.e. related to graphical editing) is not one of the best uses you may have for it.

The other components are ok, I checked them against Google and they seem to be quality stuff. This is it for now, more to come soon.
Bottom line is - if you're looking for a price/quality product, this is certainly value for money.
