To paint or not to paint 5680?

As a previous owner of 8890, i will miss its colors when i will get 5680 on wednesday (pctorque said so) i dislike the standard grey/blue (althought i do think its purple not blue) I thought spending 420 bucks on colors is a tad too much and could be used to get more stuff on 5680 like getting two 80gb hard drives also the deluxe backbag (the standard one was kinda crap) so my question is it good idea to try to paint the 5680 on my own or just name 5680 as Metrosexual mmm? just asking cuz i have seen other threads where people take apart the lappies and back together althought it ll take me a while to summon up the guts to do that.

Unless you have money to burn or are a real accessorizing freak, I don't see the point of getting painted. Yeah, it looks nice, but, really!! There are a lot of other things, including a lot of things that actually make a laptop work better, to spend the money on.

One ponders the question of why would someone give up a 8890 for a 5680......

lol, i dont blame you guys for thinking that. the reason i switched was the laptop's functionlity, i felt that i wouldnt be able to make full use of 8890 as i would with 5680. just wanted to be make sure that my money is worth it.

See, this is the same problem I'm struggling with right now. I mean, yeah, the grey/blue is cool compared to the dime-a-dozen Dell, but when you cruise these forums for a while, and the pics of that silver/green chameleon action start seducing you, the stock colors lose their flair. Plus, there's the extra $50 for the high-gloss finish. Hardly seems worth it.

And yet, I feel that it is.

It's a geek's world out there these days, folks. Everybody at my college has a computer. I have six, plus multi-monitor setups. TiVo is sweet, but a hacked TiVo jacked into my one-bedroom network (which is also on the larger house network, which my roommates adore me for) that I can control from my desktop is even sweeter. Sitting on a bus with headphones is the standard, so what do you do? Bust out the Sony MDR-V700's. Silver is sweet.

Okay, I'm being a little over-the-top, and I am probably not like most of you, but appearances are big for me. It's not that I need to feel better than anybody. In fact, I think the explanation is this: I spend a lot of time with my toys, so people naturally label me a nerd. I'm cool with that. But by making my toys work for me, both functionally and aesthetically, people will instead come along and say, "Whoa, that's cool. How'd you get that to do that?" I'm the ambassador for the beige-case, VCR-programming world.

And now I'm over the top again. But you gotta admit, if it wasn't at least partly true, the case-mod market would have no footing. Anyway, Nutso, as far as painting goes, it's a great idea, but I'd never trust myself to do my own paintjob. I used to paint TI-85's in my spare time, and it was fun, but it takes so much diligence and patience. There might be alternatives, like this action right here, and this (very cool indeed.)

So, as you can all probably see now, I'm a prime target for the Bluetooth industry. I'm probably creating a full-on time vortex with all the wires and cables I'm surrounding myself with!

Yeah, if you paint it yourself it voids the warranty.
