OK, well, I had my Aspire 5672 replaced due to random crashing, and the new unit seems to be rock stable.
The only thing that is still worrying me is the hard drive noise that was on the first laptop as well.
Two laptops with a defective hard drive in a row? Coincidence? Unlikely. But this is worrying me.
The best way to describe the abnormal noise is light metal-like clicking sound. It occurs almost randomly, and never when the hard drive is in use (when it is grinding away as its normal noise). This sound is only slightly more loud than the normal hard drive noise and can only be heard without putting your ear on the laptop, only if the room is totally quiet with zero external noise (quiet so you can hear yourself breathe).
While the noise is random, the one time when that click occurs for sure is when the laptop is turned off (or put into standby/hibernation), just before the platters spin down.
SpeedFan reports hard drive fitness at 98%-100%.
Somebody please help me out here, I am having hard time sleeping again
