tried to play deux ex and the machine froze. rebooted and received the black screen of death. would not even boot into safe mode. i turned her off for a few hours and was then able to get into windows. machine froze within a few minutes with a BSOD and some random gibberish code on the screen. rebooted and given the error message that a certain windows file was corrupt and i needed to perform a "Repair" from the boot cd. loaded boot cd and now presented with the the error: "File setupdd.sys could not be loaded. The error code is 4. Setup cannot continue." this is really a pain in my ***. i really would appreciate any advice....

Man Gr8, you must be one hard dude.

Doesn't sound like you can get anywhere with it, in which case its RMA time, again. Too bad, feel for ya.

I dunno, it sounds very software to me... Try a wipe and a total XP reinstall first before you RMA. Has this happened to you before?

i was going to wipe it, but can't even boot from the OEM cd without getting the error message.

Hopefully you've been following the DeusX thread . In addition to those suggestions, you MUST install the DeusX patch. It's running fine for me, other than an occasional blowout straight to desktop.

A loose hard drive connector? What error message is it giving you, or is it completely random?

ok. i'm in the Recovery Console from the boot cd.

i'm lost though, i was asked which installation i would like to log into at a dos prompt, entered the adminisntrative password, and taken to the c:\windows prompt. now what....anyone know what i can do here to "repair" windows? thanks.

not really, the repair console is very useless...Good only for restoring MBR and recovering small files. you should just try a total reinstall

If you are looking to reinstall windows and attempt to keep your files intact, on rebooting from the CD, choose install windows. It will find your previous installation and ask you if you want to repair it. You will still need to go back and reinstall updates. Files should be safe. Get DeusX patch.

Reseat your memory modules. And see if you can get in to your system via safe mode. Then back up. Then drop in the XP cd and do a reinstall. Change your boot order in the bios first to boot to CD.

Read this link from Microsoft before you do anything else to your system:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330181

Gives info on your error message and a possible fix.

Hope this helps
