Hard drive speed

The Toshiba 100GB drive is not very fast. I posted my HD Tach screenshot in this thread:

Feel free to add some more.

the hitachi 5400 sata is not that much better either.

im getting sub 30 avg read too...

im seriously considering getting a 7.2k 100gb... that'd be ~36 or so mb/s avg read? which is likke 20% faster.

Goes way better

I ordered the 7200 RPM hard drive, but is there any way you can confirm the speed excluding looking at the order sheet? Any programs?

Look in Device Manager under Disk Drives, then do a Google search for the model number that's normally listed there. That should enable you to find the specs for that particular model.

I received the 5400rpm 100GB Toshiba. I really think I need to upgrade to a 7200rpm, as this one's noticably not all that fast, although I haven't benchmarked it. I wish they would hurry with the 7200rpm perpendicular drives at 160GB+.

I get an avg of 28MB/s
Burst of 88MB/s
Max of 35MB/s
17.2ms

on Hitachi HTS54 (78) GB Drive 5400 RPM

There will only be about 14-20% increase in performance, consider carefully before purchase

ONLY a 14-20% increase in performance? Why is it that people here would kill for a 14-20% increase in performance in their video card or battery life, but everyone says the hard drive is no big deal? It makes a difference to me.

Some people just don't understand that for the majority of applications (not gaming) the biggest bottleneck in there system is the hard disk.

Dougie.

I've got the 7200RPM 100gb drive in my 9300 and I am getting the 120GB 5400RPM drive in my E1705. I really like the idea of having the extra 20gb of space, I DON'T like the idea of a slower drive. 20% is pretty huge increase relatively when you think about the performance boost between the various core processors is in the single digits, but will set you back a hundred or two depending on the configuration you choose.

I think the slowness is mostly limited to the Toshiba drives. If you're getting a large 5400rpm seagate or hitachi, it should be pretty fast.
