Drive Letter Assignment :: Removable Devices & External HD's

I would like to assign a specific drive letter to my external HD so that when I connect it to any device it displays as that same Drive Letter, time in and time out. Is there a way to do this via the HD's hardware profile, or any other way?

If I reformat the HD, will I be able to give it a Letter assignment that will remain in it for good and with any system that I hook it up to?

Its a Seagate 300GB

Can be done with XP Pro only and the use of the Computer Management msc there may be some third party apps that can do it to, but I don't know of any

No, there is no way to assign a removable disc a letter that will come up on any computer. The drive letter is it given is dependant on that machine. You could just name the drive to make it easier to identify in My Computer, if that's thep problem.

I was able to rename my external as adviced by poster above through the disc management tools included in XP. The HD is being recognized with its new name in 2 computers! YEY!

Thanks for all your help.
