ABF's experimental gentoo experiment - Page 2

ABF, something about you and Gentoo... Whenever the two of you come together, something has gotta blow up. I tihnk I am gonna make a new law based off that.

The Law of ABF-

As the chance of ABF trying Gentoo increases, chance of explosion, death of computer, or overall general disaster also increases at a identical rate.

Murphy's Law of Gentoo installation: If a compile can fail, it will.

MacGillicuddy's Corollary: At the most inopportune time.

nah, i think the rate is more exponential

Hmm well I tried the 2006 live cd again and now the internet is working this time :/. Well atleast the cable internet will work on the gentoo 2006 live cd but not the wireless on my laptop.

I just tried the 2006 Live cd- I'm starting my mail server today. What a pain. The graphical installer kept breaking. I'm trying the minimal install cd and it's locked up trying to mount my 2 200gb maxtor drives. Looks like it's back to the 2005.1 install.

EDIT: I switched to another SFF machine I had sitting around and the 2006 minimal installer worked perfectly.

------------MAJOR BUMPAGE----------------

finally got a chance to see if my USB-->Lan addapter works in linux. Although not in Ubuntu (daper), it does seem to work with the gentoo 2006.0 minimal install disk, so the experiment can continue. yey!

however, it won't really catch up again till next weekend, and even then i'll only get it partially done (ie...base 2006 install). Weekend after next i am busy again (out of town thursday-friday-saturday, back on saturday night, but have to catch up on school work on sunday). Then 20-24 I have school (finals...so really busy), then on the 24th, I am leaving for a week to Paris (w00t! spring break!) and only in the begining of april will i be able to get something done.

what i am trying to say is, i have capable hardware once again, but because gentoo is a time-whore, and i am LACKING free time this month, it won't get done, so don't quite rush to conclusions just yet.

i am back in business.

i am getting quite good at base gentoo installs. took me just about over an hour to do a full base install. i believe its successful, so at this time i am installing xorg and gnome (w00t! finally gentoo has 2.12 released) it probably won't finish till very late tonight, maybe even tomorrow morning. regardless, i'll report on the results, and be periodically checking in with teh forums, as well as asking for help on stuff.

goals:
- install base (done)
- install xorg/gnome (doing)
- setup alsa
- setup fglrx
- setup networking
- install proggis that i want

Should I begin the timer on the ticking time bomb?

sure go for it. its already ticking in my head. its been emerging gnome (and xorg ... 216 files) already going for 14 hours. about 10 more files to go.

update. gnome is finished.

i finally rebooted the system and everything went smooth, or so i thought. crap! my usb--> lan converter stopped working. out of despiration i stuck the cable into the "broken" sis900 and reboot. it worked....wtf? so its NOT broken? did gentoo temporarily brake it it? wtf? anyway. it works. haha.

so right now i am configuring the little things (xorg, xscreensaver, gdm, etc, alsa) then gonna do power management/cpu throttling, and then add wireless. after wireless is done, gonna start installing other progs/ finishing off the non-crucial configuration

LET THE PROBLEMS BEGIN

first of all, ALSA, no matter what i try it keeps failing grr.

so i skipped that for now, trying to get CPU throttling up and running.

abf, did you ever change the wire for ethernet? It may be a small chance that the wire charges electrically and screws up the network card in which it is pluged until it dischages, as your sis wasn't use a while. Now wait a week and check if your pcmia works.
my 2 cents

might as well be the wire. its one of those flat wind-up portable wires that i picked up at walgreens for like $10.

i am done fiddling for this week. its getting late today, i still wanna play some CS:S, and tomorrow i have tons of school work to do. i mean at this point i have the basic install + gnome up and running, still requires a lot of tweaks but that can really wait for right now. next 2-3 weekends i won't do anything.

next weekend (16-18): out of town for 3 days due to state championship in debate.
week after that weekend (22-24): finals in school
weekend and week after next (24-31): in Paris, France.
back at 6pm local (central) on the 31st, have sat and sunday to get over jetlag and do my homework so i can come back to school on monday.
