8204 grey lines on LCD - Page 7

It took the awhile for them to notice the gray lines (the guy who "fixed" my screen, and the other tech guy). Once they saw it they didn't seem to think it was a big deal. Not sure if they're going to mention it to their boss/supervisor.

Indiekiduk, did you get your laptop back yet? I'm calling Acer tomorrow to have mine sent back. I reproduced the same "Replace LCD with ..." page as you did to attach when I send it back. Can I get your Service Request number to reference them to when they tell me they never heard of the problem?

Thanks

Hi nop I havn't received it back yet. Sure this is my case ID: 309922N but mind i'm in the UK.

Well, fedex picked mine up today bound for Texas. I have a page taped onto the top of the laptop explaining everything, what LCD I want it replaced with, links to this forum and the rectangle image they can see the problem with.

The guy on the phone and my paper work says they cannot guarantee the Q LCD, only a "viable" one. I said as long as it resolves the issue of no grey lines which from all I've read here means not the samsung LCD. I specifically stated on my note to NOT replace with LTN LCD or the same issue would remain.

Let's see if they honor my request

I phoned Acer today and they said they are awaiting parts and are going to email me an ETA when they find out.

Although I'm thinking of cancelling the repair and just sending it back to where I bought it from and getting a MacBook Pro now that this is released:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

Its only £150 more (with an education discount and inc 2gb and 7200rpm 100gb)than the Acer .

Hey Guys,

Sent my notebook in to get the screen replaced, be careful what you wish for, I actually prefer my old screen. They part they gave me is:

LK.15409.014 LCD 15.4 IN. WSXGA+ QD15AL02-01 NON GLARE LF

The gray lines have gone and it is much brighter but there is a lot of light leakage and splotches. I am going to thoroughly test it this weekend as it may be my settings, but my first impressions are that the screen still sucks!!!. I wish I had not bought Acer, I now know I will never make the mistake of purchasing from them again. I guess I have to put up with this sub par screen and buzzing for 2-3 years.

Enlighten

indiekiduk thats exactly where i got mine from.. But i got mine in the middle of feb.
I'm pretty sure they won't allow you to return the laptop to them.
But tell me if they do because i'll happly send my laptop back and get a replacement

Yeh they said they only take returns up to 7 days and they were pretty stubborn about that. However we got the laptops on purchase order so we havn't actually paid yet. Also in the terms and conditions of our purchase order it says something along the lines of "Goods must be free from defects in quality or workmanship". The guy that manages our account is going to call me so I'm gonna keep fighting this. I might even pass him on to our accountant and they can sort it out between them. Our University will not pay for crap like this.

wtf

I'm in the process of buying a laptop and this was the one I was going to choose. That's before I came across this crazyness, are you all saying don't buy it? If so is there one similar that I should get instead?

The MacBook Pro is worth considering. Its a pretty much identical spec and you can run windows on it using the new Boot Camp software.

I'm really happy with my laptop, but it seems that some of them have problems, so it's a bit of a gamble.

And I happen to like my 8204, which has no substantial issues, and is a real zinger. If boot camp had been available when I purchased it, it would have been a tougher decision relative to the MBP. But that was then, this is now.

And the 8204 tends to be faster for graphics-intensive applications, as the MBP underclocks the display adapter. It also has a greater variety of connections and a higher-res screen. Still, the MBP is more elegant, and has OSX.

Got my 8204 back from Acer. They put the QD1 LCD in like I asked! Observations:
- No grey lines
- Much brighter, actually have it turned down to 80%
- No splotches
- Lower left and right corners are NOT dark
- No bad pixels
- Wiggle the lid, no rippling

Very happy with the LCD now. Just the buzzing left ... guess I'll try the 3312 bios. How come that bios exists on the euro site and not the panam site? I'm in US, it should be okay to apply 3312 from euro site?

The bios should be the same.

Sure, what are you waitin' for? European FTP is always more up-to-date than US website.

3312 bios has made no difference to the buzzing on my 8204.

I think they are putting a crystal bright display in my laptop now. Well thats what I gather from the tech notes when they read them over the phone. Still waiting on it to come back.

Man bought this 2 months ago and still havnt used it - I'm never buying Acer again.
