8204 grey lines on LCD - Page 8

My travelmate is build 06/03 and it has the samsung screen. The screen itself doesnt have any of the blotched darkness in corners mentioned, nor the buzzing noise from the gpu.

Although it doesnt pass this test:

My screen doesnt have anything like this:

Are the above horizontal lines permanently displayed, or do you have to do something to have the screen produce them?

They are permanently displayed and if your screen didn't pass that test - you have grey lines for sure. Some people just can't see it, as well as they can't see the background noise, and for some people it's extremely annoying...

I just bought this Acer 8204 -- and I have this gray line problem too. My MFG date is 0603. It has the Samsung LTN154P1-L02 screen. So, I'd assume Acer should know about this problem a lot by now, right? Any updates from anyone on this problem? Is Acer able to fix it correctly now?

It's not a problem necessarily as all kinds of LCD's have this characteristic. I have 2 LCD Monitors at work that do it. One is and NEC and the other, I forget (labels worn off). So it's really only a problem to those users it bothers. Some it does and some it doesn't. I have heard of Acer replacing them with the Q model screen. Maybe another formum member can chime in with that regard.

I returned mine and specifically asked for the Q screen. I've heard others that got the Q screen with some blotches but mine is perfect. The grey line problem is gone and it's much brighter with better viewing angles. My co-workers commented that it was better than my old screen ... they didn't have to lean over so much to read it. My LTN screen also had darker corners especially noticable at the bottom left and right. This wasn't a big deal to me but it's gone with the Q screen.

So in a nutshell, I could have lived with the grey lines until this forum pointed it out to me then it bugged me ;-). Big thing for me was 1) viewing angles and 2) brightness. I run at 80% brightness now where as before I had it 100% and wanting more. I tuned the display with Spyder2 so the colors are great (at home I use a 24" external LCD and Spyder2 adjusts the colors).

The Q screen model is:

partname: LCD 15.4 IN. WSXGA+ QDI QD15AL02-01 non glare LF
Desc: ZC1 15.4 (WSXGA+) QD15AL02 S/P
Acer Partno: LK.15409.014

@frosty,
Did you check the background noise? I'm just curious...
If you are referring to the buzzing sound ... I have that problem. I did not get that fixed and am just living with it right now.

No, the background noise means visual noise, like "snow" on badly tuned tv sets. My screen didn't have it when new but it appeared later. I sent it to the factory (that's what they do here in Mexico) an should be back by the end of the week. They say they're going to replace the screen. We'll see what happens.
Ah. I don't notice any snow. It could be there and I'm just not atuned to it but I have no complaints about the screen. It seems just as good as the screen on my Dell D600, Thinkpad T30, T42, and HP Omni Book 5000. I mainly use the laptop for development, writing docs, surfing. Note, I don't do much graphic work or play games on it.

It's hard to notice the first time and very difficult to ignore once you find it yet you might not have the problem at all.

i don't have any lcd problems but i've got my hands full with other errors and i have done a hdd diagnostic and memory test....absolutely perfect. so i dunno

I have a 8100 with the LTN screen and I tested positive on the 2 grey squares test image.

The 3(2 new, 1 probably refurbished) LTN screens I had my hands on also had many slow(?) pixels, I mean when I made them swith from red to black I could see the pixels staying red for +- 1 second. They were spread all over the surface and I could see some lines in it.

The first time I sent in my 8104 they replaced it with an 8106. The replacement did also suffer from the odd issue I stated above. After a month or 2 when trying to live with it the backlight or something broke and they replaced the LCD. Again it had the odd slow pixel thing and I sent it in again. It came back unrepaired with the despatch note it was tested for 48h and no problems with the LCD were found. The acer guy I called told me all I could have seen was within the specifications, when asking for why did they replaced it the first time he said they were in need of time that period.

Now a couple of months later I accidentally let the laptop make a jump and the screen was completely broken. Now i am paying 100 euro to get it replaced I asked what types of LCD's were possible to be build in the 8100. She named me 2 types that were in stock, both LTN. When I asked for the Quanta QD1... LCD she said it wasnt a 8100 standard LCD and I could void my warranty if I wanted that one to be built in. After she discussed with a repair engineer he would build in the QD1 and I was able to keep my warranty. Cheers to the lady who did a great job for me.

Now I hope all screen issues are definately OVER. Can anyone tell me how the QD1 screen behaves against the LTN in terms of power consumption, as some say it is much more brighter ? Thank you
