I havnt heard of anyone with a MBP complaining about this issue. It has a different model. Its lower resolution at 1440x900.

Are you positive your 0602 has no lines and is the same model? Have you tried the quadrant test?

What are the chances of the inverter causing the problem and not the LCD panel itself? I found on google that the Alienware 51m has the same samsung panel however I dont see any of those users complaining about grey lines.

Good point. ...and you know they would be raising a fit if there was. Hmmm.... I wonder if it has anything to do with the refresh rate or even the output of the inverter like you just said.

Another thing I remember reading, but haven't been able to find since: one of the features of the ATI Mobility X1000 series is its ability to directly control screen brightness as a power management feature. So, a (hope/dream/idea?) is that perhaps there's something in the current driver set that hasn't enabled this direct control.

I don't see it anywhere in the ATI control panel, but again, I swear I remember reading it as a feature of the GPU family...

I'm in the same boat - same gray lines as everyone else. I just emailed Acer about the problem, hopefully I'll get a response soon. I think it's important for everyone to start emailing/phoning Acer, if you haven't done so already. It sounds like they won't do much unless everyone complains (Hopefully, they will do something, the amount we spent on the 8204 warrants a better product than we currently have).

what is the best number to call?

i have the same issue as well, didn't really notice what exactly was wrong with the screen until looking up LCD issues on this forum. now it's confirmed. will start bitching to acer ASAP.

Please keep posting Acer's responses to you and any "news" re: this issue.

After forking out a serious amount of dough for this laptop and needing it for photoshop work, this is a pretty serious issue. Unfortunately, although I did get a full 3 year all inclusive warranty, I can't get a refund from the OEM/Wholesale place I got it from.

I'm not sure how we can get through to the right person who will take action on this. I think when laptops go in for repair the techs just match them against the reference laptop. So if the refefence one also has the problem I don't reckon there is much we can do.

If someone with new one- 0602 build date - could test and post their display model number then it would be helpful.

Acer are picking up my 8204 again tomorrow. We'll see if they can fix it this time.

This is the response I was given:

Thank you for contacting Acer America. As this appears to be a hardware issue please contact our telephone technical support line at 1-800-816-2237. Hours of operation are 7am-9pm CST Monday-Friday and 8am-5pm CST Saturday and Sunday, excluding holidays.

It's a hastle to call, I do realize that, but our chances are better if we all hastle them about this.

Sigh, alright. I haven't gotten a response back from my email, and was going to call today.

Yes, a model # of any LCD that for sure doesn't have the problem would be helpful for demand purposes heh..

LCD Grey lines issue

I have made an image here to make it very clear whether or not you have the issue with your model.

Should ALL my monitors have this problem?

I sure see the squares change, and one is brighter than the other, when moving up and down. And they this on the 8204, and my ViewSonic vx924, and on my girls AL1912. So they are all broken, right? Just doesn't make sense....
Must be. I don't have the problem on my Princeton 20.1 widescreen I just got, but I do on my Viewsonic and on my 8204. I have the Princeton set on Dual Display with the 8204 so I can drag from one to the other and from no problem to problem. Very interesting.

I will do more testing..

.. tomorrow at work where we have, I don't know how many, (many!) different brands and modells. I'll post some results.
really?? it didn't happen on my other LCD .. (EDIT: I accidentally typed CRT last post)

one thing to note though, you have to be running it at its native resolution (the HIGHEST resolution it can support). Otherwise the pixel ratio will be off and you just can't trust the results. My engineering friend reminded me of that just now
post #38 of 152
Why would it happen on your CRT?
okay so it does the same thing on a Dell Inspiron 6000 LCD. HMM... maybe this is more normal than we think..
Hmmm....
I always thought the Inspiron 6000 screens weren't that great either. Maybe that's why...
