New 710m review (2-25-2006)

Dell 710m Review:

***The specs to this machine are listed in my signature***

I purchased this laptop for school and travel purposes only. I already have a beast for a gaming laptop (Sager 9880) so I don’t need the power for school. I was looking at battery life and size going into this purchase. Read below…

Order/Shipping Process:

Order placed on February 17th, Received on February 22nd; 5 days! The whole shipping process was not at all as bad as some of the others that I have heard of around the forums. I give Dell a 9/10 for the shipping process. The only reason they did not get a 10/10 is because they don’t tell you that it is being shipped from overseas during the “Boxing” stage.

Size/Weight:

As soon as I opened the box, I was truly shocked! This thing is so small it’s crazy. From viewing some of the other reviews, I thought it looked a lot bigger. The pictures can’t do it justice. I’m 6’4 and when I took this to school people stared at me, because it looks hilarious. This is SOO tiny. My hand can cover the whole laptop front to back. One of the things I would have liked to see, is for Dell to take the battery bulge out of the back, But this is in no way a big deal seeing how small this is to start with. 10/10

Quality/Build:

The quality of this laptop is superb. It feels VERY sturdy in your hands. It is small enough for me to handle it with one hand, and while doing is it does not bend or flex at all. Great build quality. 10/10

Battery Life:

**Using the 8-cell battery**

Ok, this is dependant on you and how you use your laptop. I have been able to squeeze 5 hours out of this with WIFI, Screen turned up to max, and Mp3’s going. Than again all I am doing is using it for lectures and internet surfing during class. I’m not doing anything intensive on the processor. Perfect for what I need. I have another 8-cell just in case. 10/10

Speed:

When I need to which is hardly ever, I will turn the power settings to “Always On” to get the processor up to 2 GHz. Other wise it is usually running at 600 MHz. This thing is blazing fast. I really don’t need this kind of processing power, but with Dells 34% off, I figured why not. It is fast. That’s all I can say.

10/10

Screen:

Like I said at the top of the page, I have a Sager 9880. This screen is just as bright and clear as that. Of course it is not 17” like the sager but the quality is amazing. I popped in a DVD today to test the quality and Man Alive; this thing is Crisp and Clear. I really like the 12.1” widescreen (resolution- 1200 X 800), it’s great for movies! 10/10

Keyboard:

No problems at all here. It is smaller than your normal laptop keyboard, but I have no problem going from laptop to laptop.

10/10

Heat:

The fan hardly is ever running. I think the whole time I’ve had this I has come on maybe three times. It idols at around 51C @ 600 MHz. I live in New Mexico so it may be different for you, its hot here; LOL!

Final Words:

The laptop gets a 10 out of 10, great job making this one Dell!

Overall, this is EXACTLY what I wanted when looking for a portable laptop. I could not want anything else, except for maybe 200-300 hours of battery life. Other than that, im good. Thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed it!

Superb review. Great read.

Even nicer that I ordered one too, and despite certain reviews online, knowing a fellow NBFer is happy is reassuring. (ordered 02/22, shipped 02/24. Good stuff Dell.)

Wow..shoulda bought one myself! That's way more portable than my 600m.

I agree with everything in the review, except that I'm 6'5" and I too have no problems with the keyboard size. The looks while in class are probably some of those cell phone junky's going "oh snap!"

I think with the 2ghz cpu in it there's not much this laptop cant do that I could possibly need.

It opens up pdf's instantly, scrolling around in them even with full text and graphics there is no lag at all.

Eclipse IDE, and Visual studio 2005 builds and runs C projects lightening fast.

I haven't done a side by side, but it feels faster than my P4 2.4ghz w/1gb DDR400mhz desktop...

Has anyone had a chance to view the 710 outdoors in daylight. I'm interested in purchasing but I am concerned about clarity and glare in sunlight. I currently own Dell inspiron 8600 and it is not viewable outside. Any comments would be helpfull.

I took it outside yesterday and it seemed to be ok, in direct sunlight it does look pretty good. Still some may have a problem with it.

Just got my 700m Yea I know last year's model but it has 2.0 Centrino Intel pro wireless, Intel graphics, 1GB Ram and 80 (71) GB HD, DL DVD +/- . This machine does scream and I liked the black keys better than the new lighter keys. Plus this was only 1175. So a deal. There is little difference between the 710 and 700 as far as I know. The screen on this is just as other's have said very clear and bright, white is white on this baby. Oh And I have the remote, works with Power Point and some functions on WinAmp but we could use a program to program more functions with the remote

check out slickdeals.net

Got my ( actually 4 more that I resold on Ebay) for under $700 using the tips and coupons, some bought on ebay for a buck or two some free.

Upgraded ram for $13 bucks a stick of 512Mb delivered overnight FREE

Gotta love slickdeals, I was able to pay my car payments for 2005 just on what I made selling those 4 700M's on eBay, a BMW payment no less!

700m/710 or duo equiv. is coming in my future i think. i6000 is going to my GF, and im building a desktop.

i actually had time to play with the 1.7pm model, and i loved how solid the book felt closed, and the keyboard wasnt bad at all.

all in all, if anyone is looking portable, THIS IS IT.

Great review - Thank-you very much! I was in the process of deciding between the 710m and an M-140 - your review convinced me to get the 710. I'll be using is some - but its mostly for my wife.
yea youll be more happy with 700/710.

I love everything about the 710. I just wish they'd include BlueTooth as an option. It's a killer portable. Seems to be in a close race with the 9400 for best build quality in the Dell line.

Have any of you tried using Photoshop or other similar graphics editing apps on this thing? My girlfriend's thinking of getting one of these, but I don't know if it can handle Photoshop CS or higher. Any experience?

Thanks all,

Shizke

It's not too much of a problem using Photoshop CS on this machine. I use Photoshop CS on my 700m (1.7GHz & 2GB of RAM). It ran quite alright. The thing I would suggest if you're gonna run Photoshop is to have lots of RAM. Good luck.
