I haven't tried changing the thermal threshold. My temps are 63 degrees idle and 95 degrees gaming. The GTX bios is set to 115 degrees for its thermal threshold so I'm thinking I'm ok at 95 degrees.

man, you're NOT ok at 95.. remember, even if you're running the gtx bios, you still have a vanilla 7800go, and its recommended max temp is 93... if you're running at 95, you're playing with fire.. literally... step down a few notches..

What’s up everyone, well I got my brand new 130w brick today flashed with GTX bios and all is a success, just worried about temps tho… I just flashed it and I am running ati tool it’s been going about 10 minutes and im at 92-<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:smarttags" /><st1:metricconverter ProductID="94’" w:st="on">94’</st1:metricconverter> and that’s just at stock gtx speeds 400/1.06 is that safe? Stefanoda, I saw you write about sargentng temp being at <st1:metricconverter ProductID="95’" w:st="on">95’</st1:metricconverter> and that worried me, I think I’m going to keep the core at 400 and try to go higher with the memory, maybe around 1200 hopefully. Let me know if this temp is safe because I am sweating bullets. Also I found a new 7800 go GTX for $280 honestly do you all think it’s a good deal and wise upgrade investment for the money? If so I am going to buy it and put it in and take out my vanilla and replace my girl’s 9300, 6800 vanilla. Also I want to thank everyone here for being so awesome in helping me and each other! Please let me know what ya guys think I should do about this.

By the way why won't it let me manually overclock? the GTX bios won't allow it? I used ati tool and it just reverts back to stock and so does cool bits, I have to flash the clocks that i want in too, there is absoult no way to manual clock without reflashig, because when i was just plain old vanilla bios i could use coolbits and ati tiool to overclock, I dont get it?

correct, the gtx bios won't let you oc in software.. you need to do it by flashing the card.. a pain in the butt, i know... anyway... the 7800gtx is an EXTREMELY good card, it was king of the block just 1 month ago, before the 7900 hit the market, so it's definetly a great card.. it's price should be low too, due to the 7900 coming out... it has dual pipes, so it should be relatively cooler than the vanilla 7800 at comparable stock speeds... if you plan to oc that, I'm not sure how cool it will be, as heat generation is an issue with the 7800s in general.. 280$ is a good price IMHO, but you'll have a cooler running laptop with a 7900.. I think a 7900gs will sell for about 350$ (see balthazar for this) and some of the guys here are pumping it to 9k 3dmark05.. it's a hard choice between this and the 7800gtx... if I were to upgrade my vanilla 7800 I think I'd go with the 7900gs.. the price is not that different from the 7800gtx you're mentioning and you'd have a cooler running laptop, with the same performances as the gtx and less heat... or wait a couple more months and see the price drop after summertime on the gs also.. (as I'm doing..)

Well after tinkering with the gtx bios around I think I found a happier median, I put the vod5 to 1.25volts and I am running 450/1200, the fastest test I ran was vod6 at 1.3 volts 475/1250, but I don’t need to push all the way to the end, I’m happy with the 450/1200 runs 71 degrees when resting and stays at 93 degrees at full load. I’m wondering on you guys option on this, I’m still debating on buying the new 7800 GTX card for this, I found one shipped to me in 2 days w/tax included for $298.00 now do you think I really should buy this card? I mean what will be the major gain about 15-20% with the new card or more, would it really get $300 worth of more performance? Im trying to figure price for performance ratio, or for the best bang for my buck just stick with what I have because to be honest I am very impressed with the results from the vanilla now, also the cheapest I found the 7900gs was for $349.00+tax+ship and from what I see the 7800gtx beats the 7900gs. (gs runs a lot cooler) I don’t know…..

Did some benching and this is what I came up with:
3Dmark05(default)=6690, 3dmarks05(4xAA8xAF)=5668 3dmark(2xAA4xAF)=6295
3dmark06= 4403 (2.0)=1838 (3.0)=1897 Auqamark= 86
I’m beginning to have buyers remorse about buying the GTX now, I looked at the 7800GTX owners forum and seeing their scores, because having 24pipes they can overclock around 440/1250 or a little more at the most stable settings, are getting around the same score as I have when I ran my card at 475/1250:
Modded vanilla 475/1250 3dmark score= 7301
True GTX clocked at 450/1200 3dmark score= 7339
Now true this is a synthetic benchmark, I am sure during actual game play the FPS will go up due to the 24/8 pipes of the GTX
Does anyone know if the E1705/9400 has the correct heat sink for the Northbridge that can allow the GTX second heat pipe to rest thru it, I read that some already have it others (like overseas models) have the same one as the 9300 and needed to order the xps’ for $10 from dell, can someone confirm this?

I saw Balthazar selling the 7900gs starting at $300 a day after I paid for my 7800 GTX, o’well im sure I’ll be happy with the GTX, I’m going to try 450/1200 right of the bat when I get it, I have read people going a little bit higher with theirs, I’m actually hoping to reach 475/1250 when I get mine. Now I knew at stock for both the 7800gtx and 7900gs, the gtx beats it, I didn’t realize the 7900 can overclock to 600Mhz+ that’s sick! From 375 stock speeds, when o/c that changes things and put the gs ahead by quite a bit! Also I figured since I am going to crack open my lappy, I might as well do things right! So I bought a new T2500 CPU for $229.95, that should bring scores and performance in games up a bit, I read that the T2500 performs about the same or a bit better than an AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+,and I listed my T2300 for sale. Well I’ll post my new scores next week, Peace!

Did anybody try to undervolt? I'm afraid of not being able to boot after flash. My main concern is reducing temps. Thx
post #252 of 276
Well my t2500 and gtx both came in today, I had no problems putting in the t2500 but the gtx wouldn’t go in, there is a silver screw mount that’s connected to the motherboard and it’s in the way so the card cant line up right, if there was a way to cut it off in would mount up perfectly. Does anybody have any idea why this is like this? If it was another ½ inch over it would fit, I don’t want to damage the mobo trying to cut it off, I have no idea what to do, so I put my vanilla back in and clocked it at 475/1250 with the 1.3 mod this time, any help?

there is a guide on how to put a 7800gtx in a 9400 in this forum... should be somewhere under the Dell 17+ inch notebook section... do some research, it's there... (FYI, you'll have to cut a piece of plastic near the heat sink to the upper left, just in front of the procesor's sink and file away at that screw... it's all in the guide...

you are going to have to unsolder that PIN i know this sucks and it might void your warranty as well.

..I have to add that the gain in performances makes it worth to do it.. go ahead, don't be scared.. and post some pics...
Yea i figured it out today, i just cut it off with a rotery drill bit, poped the card in after bending it a little bit and removing 2 or 3 of the cooloing fins on the right side. and works great best clock so far is 430 core 1220 memory and got 7602 on 3d mark which is better than 6690 i got with my vanilla @ 450/1200, one thing tho.. what's up with the temp monitor on this? it always says 265' degrees and nvtemplogger say 27' and keeps beeping sometime for a sec or two it will say 74' is there anyway to get the temps right, or it really dosent matter. One thing the keyboard is not burning hot like th o/c vanilla was.
Well retweaked everything running 450core-1200mem pretty happy with it for now, idel temps are much lower on this card stays around 59 degrees and when playing is about 88'-93' (which was about the same as my vanilia@450/1200@vid5-1.25v or 475/1250@vid6-1.3v. I guess the extra pipes heats it up. As for 3DMark05 best score so far is 7766 wch is much better than my vanilia which got 6690-6835. And most games went up quite a bit, the 24 pipes make a huge difference.

I just got a brand new 9400 from Dell yesterday with WUXGA+ and a 7900GS Let me tell ya they made a huge Improvement from the 7800 series. With my 90 Watt Power supply I was able to easily overclock the 7900 to 600 core and 1200 memory, when I used my 130 watt from my E1705 I tried 625 core 1250 memory and I have read people hitting 650/1300 without any other special cooling. For now I’m gonna leave the 90 watt and keep 600/1200 because I need the 130 watt for my E1705/7800GTX. I’ll pick up another 130 sometime next week and try going past 625/1250, the main thing is temps everyone knows the 7900 series yield lower temps but using a 130 watt does bring up temps, even if you use the same voltages and clock speeds! Anyways I broke the 9000+ mark in 3DMark05 my GTX only gets around 7600+ scores.

****7800 Vanilia, 7800 GTX, 7900GS Review For Dell Laptops****

I hope everyone finds this little review helpful! It can give you and idea of what to expect before going out and buying a new CPU or Card. I have 2 New Dells E1705\9400 which i used as control subjects for the tests, enjoy!

These are the best scores I have gotten using different configs and upgrades to try to give everyone an idea of the performance difference between 7800 Vanilia OC w/gtx bios-->"a real"7800 GTX OC-->7900GS OC w/1.24mod. After all upgrading done I have e1705 w/T2600&7900GS and my wife's 9400 w/T2500 &and a real dual pipe 24pp 7800 GTX

CPU/Video card config temps 3dmark05 3dmark06
----------------------------------------------------------------------
T2300 w/7800(450/1200) 93-94 5504 3988
T2500 w/7800(450/1200) 94 6205 4110
T2500 w/78GTX(430/1200) 86-88 7386 4605
T2600 w/79GS(600/1200) 82-86 8967 5035
T2600 w/79GS(625/1250) 88 9104 Never tried
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Higest\Safest Clock that I felt my 9400\E1705 with my real 7800GTX was 430/1200, and the best setting so far for my e1705 w/7900GS is 600/1200, unless someone tries a diffrent volt mod try to get the GS near the 650/1300 range (if possible) I'm staying with it. Before I bought my new laptop I was skeptical about the 7900GS compareing to the 7800 GTX, I was shocked how high it overclocked even with 20pipes it gets 2000 more points than the 7800GTX, I would love to get my hands on a 7900GTX and tinker around with it, but i am yet to even hear let alone see, one for sale by itself. For now I'm very happy with near 9000 point scoring card, My desktop 4400+/1800xtOC gets 9722 in 05' 4783 in 06' So i am extremly impressed with these laptops nearing my desktop in 05' and somehow beating my desktop in 06', now if i can find someone to buy my desktop I'd be even happier to help me get out of debt for buying these 2 laptops,LOL Hope everyone found this helpfull, thanx!

Here are some test compareing which I have done over the past couple weeks (mind you the 7800's are with a T2500, and the 7900's are with a T2600)

7800GO(450\600 1.25v) 3Dmark05 = 6205 Oblivion Higest FPS 17 (med)
7800GTX (430\600 1.3v) 3Dmark05 = 7462 Oblivion Higest FPS 26 (max)
7900GS (600\600 1.24v) 3DMARK05 = 8967 Oblivion Highest FPS 23(med)
7900GTX(600\700) 3Dmark05 = 9640 Oblivion Highest FPS 34(Max)
These are my best 05 scores I did and the best quality settings oblivion auto-set with fPS usinf FRAPS I have owned all 4 cards at a time in my DELLS.
Sold my 7800 Go for $249.95 and Bought a Brand new 7800GTX for $270
Sold my 7900GS single Pipe for $269 and bought New 7900GTX for $499
*Well worth the upgrade for price to performace ratio, I think.
