Discussion abt IPOd gen5????

ok i know its a apple computer thread but i have seen threads abt ipods, i think. dont flame me please.
so which format do u guys use to rip ur cd's? i use AIFF on automatic for my best songs, and aac @256 k for the rest of them. on AIFF the avg size is abt 40 meg, and on apple lossless, same song would prob. be 25 meg. so i guess there is some compression in apple lossless. im also thinking of switching to mp3 @ 192 k, cause the acc sound quality feels a bit 'soft'.
i use videora to convert videos for the ipod. its ok but on some videos, the audio-video is not in-sync. sort of like the old kung-fu movies. and tht happens even if i re-convert ther same video over again.
havent bought any accesories for it yet, but thinking of getting a wall socket charger and a dock, specifically for the line out to connect to my stereo and car stereo. i bought altec lansing ipod headphones, but they sound like shit compared to my sennheiser 212pro's. anyone have suggestions for behind-the -neck sport headphones. a Best buy employee also told me i would have to buy ipod specific headphones, and normal headphones wouldn't work. what a douche.
so overall pretty happy with it.

i have most of my collection done at 192 as mp3s on my desktop using Nero's encoder. for my iBook and Nano i have the same stuff, but ripped @ iTunes AAC 128 to save on space. the iTunes solution @ 128 just sounds better than mp3 and Nero's AAC solution at the same bitrate. i haven't tried iTunes AAC for higher bitrate stuff so i don't know what it sounds like. i'd say go with what u like and sounds best to u, and takes into consideration your storage needs/limitations.

ipod specific headphones? u mean like the ones that plug into a universally standard mini-stereo jack? lol yeh, that sales rep needs some help.

best buy people aren't so smart. I overheard one of them tell a customer there isn't a difference between lcd and flat-screen.

Well, technically, the term "flat screen" has been applie crt monitors and televisions as well as an lcds by various companies. I think my toshiba crt TV was originally marketed as a "flat screen" tv. So from a technical standpoint, he may be wrong, but from a marketing standpoint, he is somewhat accurate.

Yeah, I meant isn't, not is.

Apple Lossless is about 2:1 as far as compression but the quality is bit for bit exactly the same as an AIFF file.

at equivalent bitrates, aac has better sound quality than mp3. The best cd-ripper is exact audio copy (EAC). I use dbpoweramp because I had some issues with eac, and it's also good. If you rip to mp3, make sure you use the Lame encoder. I rip my cds to 224 aac, because above this bitrate most songs are larger than the ipod's buffer, dramatically shortening the battery life. I personally cannot tell the difference between 224 aac and 256 aac, and I have a good ear.

I see no reason to switch to mp3, especially at a lower bitrate, unless you're having space issues. I wouldn't go lower than 224kbps, though. Even then, I would just rip to lower aac bitrate. But that's just me.

If you want some good behind the head headphones, get the koss ksc-55's, although I find that style uncomfortable. The ksc75's use the same drivers and have clips that are more comfortable.
I don't know of many other headphones in that style that are any good, unless you want to spend over $100 (and their improvement in sound quality is negligable).

The iPod is supposed to, from what I understand, have a 32 megabyte buffer.

ya at 40 meg, it prob. reads direct from the hard drive, killing the battery. at AIFF the bitrate is 1411. i also like the fact that itunes cleans up the stutters on some of my cd's which r scratched beyond recognition. other encoders, nero etc did a rotten job.
