OSX Tiger, external drive

I have an external drive for laptop(I book) that I wanted to load tiger on using disc from laptop but was unable to do so. Is this because its illegal and Apple prevents this on the disc's ? Its a larger drive than current internal and i thought I could install large software files on it. Any help would be appreciated. Do I have to buy a fresh copy of Tiger to do so ?

afaik u should b able to install to external from restore disks. the bigger question is whether or not the disk is HFS+ formatted or not?

What exactly happens when you try to install OS X on the drive?

Not all external drives can be used as boot drives and the installer should tell you whether or not you can boot with the drive or not.

The drive does allow files to be copied, so it appears to be working .its a usb connection ,its was formatted with OSX utility. When installing the restore disks just get a black screen and lockup and have to force quit with start button. Didn't know about posible drive not being bootable. So this is likely a drive problem and not restore disc issue ?

Where does the install go to a black screen?

You can also try installing without rebooting. Insert the Install disk and navigate to System\Installation\Packages then open OSInstall.mpkg and follow the instructions.

Triadone and Kazaze ,you guys are fantastic...you are the "genius bar"of the net. Guess I need a new firewire drive. Here's an issue on the Ibook i now have since i tried to boot that external drive. When the Ibook is booting ,before the Mac osx logo starts i see what looks to be a file folder(center of screen) with a ? in it then goes away as logo appears. Is there any way to get rid of it ? Only there since this boot thing. Thanks for your help and tips. "You Da Man"

i believe that's from having the USB drive attached during booting.

I thought the last few versions of OS X supported USB boot drives now, or is it just the Intel Macs?

Go to System Preferences>Startup Disk and make sure the iBook's harddrive is set as the main start disk and that should get rid of the folder.

yeh, i think the new intel macs are supposed to make use of the USB booting, tho i haven't read any reviews of the feature.
