XPS M170 vs Acer Ferrari 4006?

I am looking to buy a new laptop in the $2000 price range. I think Ive narrowed it down to two choices, the Dell XPS M170 and the Acer Ferrari 4006.

I am totally new to the high-end laptop world, so please excuse me if this post sounds stupid to you guys.

Any thoughts?

I like the fact that Acer is a 15.4" screen instead of the Dells 17". (The Dell might be too big to easily take with me travelling). This computer will not be used as a desktop replacement, and it will be travelling with me. I can't find dimensions on the XPS 170 on Dells website.

I like the fact the Acer is 64Bit and comes with XP Professional x64, and will be ready for Vista. However, I understand that a 64 bit cpu and OS have little to no-effect on todays programs.

I like the Dells NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 6800 much better than the Acer's X700

When it comes to processors, I have NO idea how the AMD Turion64 ML-40 (2.2GHz) stacks up against the Intel® Pentium® M Processor 760 (2 GHz/2MB Cache/533MHz FSB)

Any thoughts?

They're not really comparable, but the P-M is faster and more efficient than the Turion. The video cards available in the M170 (6800 Ultra and 7800 GTX), blow the Acer's X700 away. If you're a gamer you'll immediately be able to appreciate the difference between the cards. If you don't game at all, go for something lighter and cheaper than both. The M170 is bigger than the Acer by probably 2 inches in width and maybe 1.5-2 lb's heavier. For something with as much power as the M170 though it is thin and light compared to other gaming notebooks based on Clevo's 13 lb notebook chassis.

Basically if you're a gamer, go with the M170, otherwise go with something cheaper and lighter than the Acer. Acer's notebook really is a master of nothing and sacrifices too much to be a good choice for anyone.

edit: also even though the Pentium M is 32-bit it is capable of running Vista. Vista's only major requirement is a DirectX 9 compatible video card, which both the X700 and 6800/7800 are.

I was messing around with an asus laptop a while ago, and if i remember correctly, the keyboard had lots of flex... Thats a big deal for me for some reason.. my 9300 (same as xps2) there is very little if any keyboard flex.. when a keyboard has a lot of flex, it makes the whole thing feel flimsy to me..

Blahman:

Thanks for the advice. I think I am going to take your suggestion and get something cheaper than both, something in the $1000 dollar range. I really just want something to be able to watch movies on while travelling, and play the occasional medium-range game (like the new Starwars: Empire at War game, and other RTS types)

We are talking about Acer laptops. You mention "asus". Did you mean Acer?

Please, all these misconceptions are starting to get annoying...

Probably the only plus to having an Acer is that the CPU is overclockable. Other than that, the M170 is king!

As sad as it is, it doesn't sound like the M170 is for him

The 15 inch, AMD Turion laptop market is not that scarce.

To the Original Poster (to lazy to scroll up at this point),

Goto the Dell Core Duo section of NotebookForums. Hang out with them and they will let you know when the first good deal on a Dell E1505 laptop comes out. It's 15.4" widescreen (good for your movies), will have an ATI x1400 video option coming soon (good for medium-load gaming), and with the 9cell battery option should get you 3-4 hours of battery life while doing either of those activities (something that the XPS and Acer Ferrari can't do).

Once the right deals start coming out again... you'll be looking at spending around 800$ and have everything you want.

Sorry that you won't be joining our ranks, but we'd rather you have what you want and need over convincing you to buy what we have.

Good luck to you.
