you are correct, it depends on the location of the chip on the ram module i suspect.
also, in my case, i have 2GB ram so i figure there wasn't a demand to use the other 1gb, so although the system didn't crash, it was very confused when running into ram intensive programs and not being able to use more than the 1gb, thus system hangups and slowdowns, but no error messages or bluescreens. but who knows.
i only decided to test the ram after the slowdown was pissing me off even after i clean formatted again. both ram slots tested out good, and one 1gb stick tested good, but the other 1gb stick produced a bunch of errors.
no not dell ram, but has lifetime warranty, so returned to company and new one on its way.
decided to give the aging 700m an upgrade with a momentus 7200.1 100gb HD, too. had to, since i sold my previous lappie hd i was using for backup on an ext. enclosure...now my current fujitsu hd will be backup.
just waiting on damn dell tech to get here to fix the onboard speakers.
