Airline Adaptor

Thread Starter
Has anyone found an airline adaptor that will power the beast (8890)? If so- where? I've been looking and can't find one.
Thanks!

There's not going to be one, the airline outlets are limited to 75 watts, not sufficient. At least that's the last I heard.

Anybody with better information?

Do they have enough power for a 5680?

Can you use a laptop on a plane?

dang...Maybe I'll have to buy another battery...Sometimes it sucks having a beast of a lappy!

Careful using the Sager on a plane, the power of the thing may just bring the plane down!!

Kidding aside, I'm curious about such an adapter for my 4080. Anyone have any leads of suggestions?

can't they make one anyways so the battery is drained slowly? some power is better than no power!

I was able the get one for my Dell that powers the lappy only no battery charge it tells you that it is not the right power adapter and do you want to use it. Like someone said 75 watts max.
It is nice to have two computers so you can choose the right one for your needs at the time.

Yes, you can use a laptop on planes, after they say its okay after takeoff and before final approach. However, I am told the circuit for the planes is only rated for 75 watts and its not on all seats or airlines. I think it may be restricted to first class or something. I've not been able to find it anyway.

I am not sure what would happen if you plugged it in and started sucking juice. I guess the breaker could flip and shut you down. I am not sure what effect, if any, low power has on either of the adaptors. I suppose it could damage them.

Here's an article on the subject: http://www.strom.com/awards/246.html

In short, I wouldn't count on it. If you need power, you best BYOP!!!

Well I got mine right from dell and they say it is the right one for it and it works great. I have alink to a page that list all the Airlines and the planes that they have and what ones have power, but I can't seem to find it I will look more and see what I can find it.

I just flew with my 5680 to canada and back. I used it on dual batteries running the CPU at 100%, under full load and it lasted the whole flight, minus the time that they wont let you turn it on(about 5 mins when taking off and landing). The flight was about 1hr and 30 mins, and I played a few missions of Halo and Call of Duty. Very sweet, and when I was done, the battery life was at 36%. I dont know what I will do on longer flights, but they DO let you use laptops on planes.
Their rule is, when they turn the seatbelt light off, you can use laptops. When its on, you cant. They keep it on till the plane is about halfway to it's cruising height and then turn it off. They only turn it back on when there's bad turbulance or when they are landing.

As for air adapters, I flew coach class on Air Canada both ways and there were none on the seats. They are also low wattage if you do find them.

For business I have to fly quite often; Coach, Business Class and even sometimes First Class on many different airlines. Mostly Jet Blue, United, Northwest, and AA. I've only seen an airline adapter plug on one flight and the Attendant said they're now disabled because of security concerns.

As far as being allowed to use a laptop I can confirm you may. I often use my P.O.S. 8200 Inspiron for as long as the batteries last.

haha i dont think any power supply or extra batteries can help me through this one....i have to fly upwards of 24 hrs, if i have one of the 8790 with prescotts i bet it would suk up the whole power of the plane in tht much time

Or you could just wheel on a pallet load of batteries.

Has anyone ever used those external batteries that I have seen at best buy? They plug right into where the a.c. adapter goes. Do they work or are they a joke as I was considering getting one so that I could actually finish a DVD during a flight. Also, is there a way to save power while just watching a DVD?

"Sir, you can't bring that deep cycle marine battery on board"

"Why not?"

"Because it's too big and heavy, sir"

"Really? It's smaller and lighter than my Sager notebook."

The problem with the external battery packs is:
1) most do not have the power needed, either quantity or quality. It would have to put out 6 amps @ 20 VDC. There are a few that do this.
2) it needs to have that special power plug, which is available only at the AC Adaptor manufacturer. I have tried and tried, as yet, I haven't found anyone that can even identify the plug so I can search for it by its proper name.

However, I have contacted the AC Adaptor manufacturer and they are willing to sell me some of those plugs. I hope to cobble together a external battery pack that will work with CLEVO machines. The big problem now is price, the lowest I've gotten the basic parts is around $450. I suppose buy stuff in quantity would help some but my guess is maybe 10% to 15% at best which still leaves the cost at around $400. I personally feel that's too high, way too high, should be down around $200 to $300.

Any comments on this? How much would folks be willing to spend for an external battery pack?

I know a big question there is how long would it run the machine which depends on the machine. Well, for simplicity's sake, let's say an 8890 as it uses more power than anything else. I figure a EBP (External Battery Pack) would have to last at least two hours at full tilt in order to be realistically useful. That would give the 8890 a full three hours total, more on other less hungry machines. Is two hours on an 8890 a reasonable goal for this?

MARQUISDARQUIS... Are you reffering to the external bat packs that I have seen at bestbuy or circuit city? What good are they if they don't have enough juice? Maybe they would help extend the amount of time the internal battery lasted. The ones I am reffering to were around $150 I believe. They were fairly big, but pancake shaped to fit in your travel case easily. Anyone have any experience with these? I almost bought one a month ago, but was running short on funds because of the holidays. Maybe I should just get an i8600 and not worry about it! Oh, BTW - not that you couldn't notice - but I am fairly green about much of this stuff. But I learn more every day I visit these forums.

I doubt if anything costing $150 would be able to do the job, unless it was an incredible deal.

As I noted above, unless you have something that can produce 6 amps at 20 VDC, its not going to do much good.

There are a number of batteries out there, in all voltages, shapes and sizes. The big thing is to get at least 20 V but not a lot more and be able to maintain a current of 6 amps. KOKAM has a LIon Polymer battery that's 1/4" thick by 18" by 13" that has 70 AmpHours at 3.7 volts. It'd be easy to connect 6 of those in series to get 22.2 volts and you'd have 1.5 KWh of power. That would run an 8890 for 12 hours at full tilt.

I am still trying to find out the cost of that arrangement.

Otherwise, the best thing you can ever do is learn. Don't ever be ashamed on not knowing something, its an honest failure, and always remember there is only one stupid question: "Why didn't I ask?"

hey guys... i travelled from dubai ( middle east) to NEw york on malaysian airlines in business class.....I have a toshiba satellite 5205-s703 which needs 70-75 W.. THe power source was only in first & business class ... It seems malaysian airlines keeps a targus adapter for passengers so i used one of theirs and it worked greaT! i played games (far cry, etc) , watched dvds',etc and i used the adapter for about 3-4 hours and there was no power cut.....

cheers

Wasn't there a thread about this already? Someone used the regular car adapter on the planes, since its the same plug, and it worked just as well as it did in the car. Kept the battery at 100% i believe.
