BSOD - Unmountable Boot Volume

Yes, I know this is bad...
&$@*()#&$*()#@&()*$&*(@)#&)@%&#)
Anyways, here goes:

I used my pc (self built 1.4 Athlon, 256 pc2700 DDR, 30G 5400, Geforce 4 mx440) yesterday afternoon; watched many episodes of Noir, worked great.

Shut it off, turned it on, and boom! BSOD with an unmountable boot volume error. So I restart umpteen times, try safe mode, etc, nothing works; cannot get into XP Pro.

So I jump into SuSE (Dueling with latest professional version of SuSE. 5G for SuSE, 25G for XP). I can access my NTFS partition (25G/XP), and can access any information, movies, pictures, stored there.

What I'm wondering is, what can I do to fix this? Will a repair installation of XP do? (Not the console repair mind you, that just f***s everything up to beat hell, but just a repair install). Am I doomed to reformat?

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

(Of course, my final option, just go without a pc until I get my 5660 in April/June [parents decision. blah]?!)

THANKS

Essential answers to be able to help

Hello,

What do you use as a boot loader ? Grub ? or lilo ? Is XP a NTFS or a FAT32 filesystem ? If NTFS, it sounds like you tried to read and WRITE to a NTFS volume. As stated in the linux kernel src documentation, WRITE support to NTFS is considered dangerous and may result in data Corruptions.

I f this ain't the case, and it is just windows failing to recognise its own starting disk, well unfortunately there isn't much you can do....apart reinstalling the box, or trying a system restore from some ways....damn windows is complex after all

1. Lilo
2. I said several times XP is NTFS
3. I never attempted to WRITE. And XP bombed BEFORE I went and checked it out in SuSE. So that afternoon, it went:
a. Use XP. Works fine.
b. XP Bombs. Bang head on keyboard. Reboot multiple times.
c. Go into SuSE to see if my files are still there. Yep, still there. (I like how you can hover over an mp3/mpg file in SuSE and it plays for you. Anyways...)

That's it. So you say I'm f***ed as well? Damn...Can I get a second opinion?

I guess I'll just have to use SuSE for now. Damn winmodem - I can't get online with it though Argh. Let's see, I'll have to back everything up on CD's in SuSE...Do you think I could just pop the HD into my friend's pc and back it up? Will his XP be able to see it?

If my experience is any indicator of things that are bound to happen, I very strongly suggest that whatever you do (or don't do), get your data outta that hard drive as fast as you can into a safe place.

Cheers.

LOL "Cheers"! I wanna bop you with a hammer!

Yeah, that was my impression too. If I remember correctly, my other friend's pc did that too, and he just transferred his info and reinstalled. I think.

lilo...

Did that procedure overwrote Lilo, or just checked window disk ? Access ? F8 + Repair Console ? Cool you're back with no loss.

A good reason to have 2 HD's

With two physically seperate HD's, one can be used for the OS and one for the data.

That way, you can re-format and re-install the OS as a worst-case scenario, but still have important data (like pr0n, illegal mp3's, DiVX rips, etc) safe.

Anyway, glad the chkdsk /r worked out, but I'd be warry.

By any chance, do you have an IBM deskstar (aka deathstar) HD? Had one of them crap out on me...

Curious,

I agree. Data tends to like destroying itself as fast as possible.

Cheers.

Well, my friend is selling a 60G 5400 for $60. The thing is, I'm just going to use this machine As Is until I get my 5660 in April/June (Whenever my parents decide to pay their part of it )

And I honestly dunno what HD. I ripped it out of an HP that I won. I did win a 100G HD, but unfortunately I had to return it to the guy for a case/mobo/processor (long story).

Is that a laptop drive, or desktop one?

Cheers.
