Emerald, I don't know that there's a "right" answer to your question of whether an Alienware is worth it or not. That's highly subjective. Is it worth it to YOU? Before the price hike at the end of the year, I was convinced that Alienware was worth it. My money was as good as spent (I just needed a little time to save some of it up before spending it )
However, when the price hike hit, AW was no longer worth it for me. I looked around and settled on the Sager side. More options, cheaper pricetag, but totally lacking in the Look At ME category.
I'm not bashing AW. I'd love to have one of those machines, actually. But the pricing and having looked around have changed my opinion of what matters to ME. You have different wants and needs, so an AW might be right up your alley. Look around a bit. Check out the Sagers, the Dells, the Fujitsus, the Voodoos, etc. The better informed you are, the happier you'll be when you do decide on which one you want.
If you buy an Alienware, do it with the understanding that you've found exactly what you want. That way, you're not in for any surprises and you're not going to be sad a day later when Company X lowers prices on their computers or offers a new fanglydanglywhatchamagiggy.
Good luck and happy huntin' !
I hope you're happy w/ whatever it is that you decide that you want

Bet thats not happening with any other notebook makers.
