so which one is upgradeable and what does that mean
post #22 of 46
Most notebooks have upgradable CPU, memory, and hard drive. Very few notebooks have upgradable Graphics. however. The Voodoo M:355 and the Alienware A51M have that feature. But keep in mind that come Q3 2004 a revolution across the entire computer industry is coming. In the Western front (desktop front), Alderwood, BTX and PCI-Express means that you cannot upgrade your current computer without throwing away the motherboard and perhaps the case. On the Eastern front (notebook front) Sonoma, PCI-Express and New Card will mean that even if you have a notebook with upgradable graphics you cannot use it since PCI-Express has a entirely new bus. So don't look too much into upgradability, unless you are willing to wait until Q3.

so which laptop is upgradeable from 64 to 128 an dhow do i do that and/or get a 128 to update too
post #24 of 46
So far, only the Voodoo M:355 and Alienware Area-51 M have upgradable graphics. It is not worth it though, you have to swap out the entire graphics board and buy a proprietary one from the same vendor. You cannot just add more VRAM as you can system RAM.

will a 64 meg centrino machine be able to play good games like halo and call of duty without lag
post #26 of 46
Yes. The M10-CSP64 or the M10P-CSP64 with a 1.6Ghz PM is more than enough to play DX8 Games. WIth DX9 games they are fine with anti-aliasing and anisotrophic filtering disabled. With those settings on 4X you may expericence lag.

You mention that most notebooks have upgradeable CPUs. Can you replace a P4 with a PM, or even the next generation? I have my heart set on the Fujitsu N5010 because of the superior screen (for photo editing, it's important to me to have an adequate contrast ratio to be able to distinguish between black and the many nuances of "almost black", and not to let a very slight change in viewing angle change my perception of the whole image in adjusting brightness and saturation). I don't mind that it only has a 64 MB video card, since I work with mostly still images, and only rarely dabble in video editing. However, I am disappointed with the P4 in terms of battery life, weight, and heat, and would very much like to be able to upgrade the CPU someday. Probably not immediately, because the P4 certainly does fit my immediate needs, but perhaps a few generation CPUs from now.

but a 128mb vid card wouldnt have any lag right
post #29 of 46
No. People have benchmarked a M10P-CSP128 with PM 1.6GHz with a pixel shader game using 4xAA and 4xAniso with decent frame rates. Do a search for it if you need precise numbers.

The 128 is a defective model and it will not run Halo at all. The best option is the 64mb Radeon 9600, which most of laptop with PM is around 1700 and less. And so u know, a laptop is not a desktop, you do not get as much bargaining rights. You have to take what they make and price.

The 128mb is defective? Is it the M10-CSP128 or the M10P-CSP128? Is it just halo?

I have to disagree with you here. A 64MB M10 with a 1.4GHz or 1.5GHz Pentium M will play DX9 games at good frame rates without disabling anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering. At most, medium textures may need to be selected instead of high to be able to fit the textures into memory. See these reviews of the Gateway M505 for real world gaming experiences with this combination.

I have never heard of the Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB (M10P-CSP128) being defective. Does anyone have any confirmation for this? Is that just a bug with respect to Halo? If so, that can hardly be called a defect, as software and hardware incompatibility is commonplace.

If the 128mb is defective, then the 64mb is defective too. They are essentially the same (both have 128-bit pipes), the only difference is the extra ram.

Thanks for the reassurance, dej. That post by ancientmtk made me a little worried. But I don't know what his sources were...

it was a sarcasm as i see this thread as meaningless as it can be

If you can find a laptop with a 63 meg Radeon, they're usually much cheaper than the 64 meg ones. ... discuss...

lol

I knew that they were different computers, what I meant was they are basically the same in terms of features (except for the VRAM) but the AOPEN MODEL is much CHEAPER!!!
