I have a non-pro version in my lappie which was ordered about a month ago. It was not listed as a PRO last night, so this must be the newest card they offer.

If yours is still in production, you should be able to have them switch it..but who knows how long of a delay that will cause.

I will keep the card I ordered until they come out with something much better. I cant see spending alot of money on more video ram.

There is no such thing as a pro or a non-pro. It is a marketing gimmick that is all.

Damnit, for once i wished it didn't jump from Phase 4 to 9 within 24 hours!

Here is a basic article for those interested in the difference in the Pro vs. non-Pro versions. It looks like they are using GDDR2-M memory which is made for mobile computers and has different memory clock speeds (supposedly similar clock speeds to DDR with less power usage). The pro also has some thermal sensor (overdrive technology) that adjusts the GPU clock speed depending on how hot the chip is, basically automatic overclocking. I doubt if either will make a big difference since it is just automation of overclocking and lower power consumption. It just seems like they are trying out new technology to squeeze every last bit of speed out of the GPU and make it more laptop friendly. No big deal IMO.

Here is a link discussing the memory specifically

I emailed my sales rep at alienware.co.uk about changing my order from an ATI 9600 to an ATI 9600 PRO and this is what she said

Please accept this as confirmation that both the cards are the exact same only the name is different !

So hopefully I won't be getting an out-of-date GPU straight away. That'll be when the 9700 comes out

That ............... sorta sucks. I'd be expecting the word PRO to appear in my startup screen ............

I know what you mean. The PRO desktop card is a higher spec than the standard 9600, so how come they can suddenly change the name of the mobile GPU without a spec change.

Unless they always put in PROs and didn't tell anyone until now....... Nah that'd never happen. Must be just their marketing dept gone mad and decided to lie to their punters
