hi, im new to this thread and wanted some advice?

which one of the two models should i choose? my requirements are first that the screen should be of the best quality, will do alot of gaming and traveling so need something light, fast graphics card... and this investment should last me for atleast the next 3 years... any recommendations...

cheers!

I for one am happy with my 8204 but many on the forum are unhappy with the brightness. Do a search on screen or brightness and you'll see.

I had the same doubt, and I ended up ordering the 4006... I want it to last me 5 years though, so 64bit was a major influence in my decision..

The major difference between these two is the graphics card... the 8204 is superior but the X700 is still a pretty good card..

Have in mind that there are many bugs and unsolved matters on the 8204, mostly because its very new...

In the end its up to you. if you think that 64bit+less hassle > better video card, go for the Ferrari.

4006 wise for me, I have 4005, 8something to be honest read more powerful, but the moment it was out I hear people cpmplain, 4005 there are complains, but admiration seems more.

I'm really happy with my 4005, and I think you will be with 4006. My advise, do not buy a laptop unless you actually see it, test it, don't get suprised! you're paying too much money.

I've got this same quandary right now.
4006 - 2.2ghz turion 64 bit 120gb 1gb $3300AU
8204 - core duo 2ghz 120gb sata 2gb $3750AU

I want to make my mind up by 18th but I keep changing my mind.
I sway to the ferrari because I do like the red (different to everyone else)
I sway to 8204 because I do a bit of video editing and it should kick ass in that respect.

Any thoughts?

If you do video editing then i'd definatly go with the Duo. Another thing whenever Memron or whatever Intel will call their 64 bit duel core chip gets released you could (providing Acer does a bios update) just swap out the old 32 bit duel core and pop in the new. But from what it sounds it seems that duel core would be the way forward for you. And most if not all of the problems have been sorted with the 8204 and the new April batches have been released which seem to have no problems. the 03/06 batch were the first batch many of the problems ironed out. Also if you like pleasing looks the 8204 comes with carbon fiber lid.

The screen of the 4005 is very good I think! The only thing what sucks on the Ferrari is (I write it in another Topic) the permanent FAN-NOICE! And no solution to see!

If you want it to last a few years, you don't have much choice. It's either a 8204 or wait a few months for the Ferrari 5000 series with the X1600. The X700 in the 8104/F4005,6 while prety good is beginning to show it's age on some of the newer games (even RTS ones like AOW HT, BFME II, etc).

Where did you hear about the Ferrari 5000 series?

Are you speculating that a new Ferrari series follows the release of a new 8200 series?

It only has to last me a year as I upgrade every year (more points for the 8204 as it's newer)

I don't do any gaming

Thanks for all the advice

Acer will announce the F5000 series once AMD officially launch the X2 on May 9th. Given their past track record, you can figure that units will start arriving end of May or beginning of June.

sweet!!! I'm assuming the Ferrari 5000's will be equipped with T2X, and I hope, just like you said, also w/X1600. Man that'd be really awesome!
Btw, sorta off topic, has any of you heard about the Lamborghini's laptops? lol. I wonder if we're gonna start seeing Toyota and Ford laptops now o.O
post #14 of 18
Bah if you need a Laptop now then get the 8204WLMi and if you want to upgrade the CPU to the newer Merom which is 64bit then do that when it comes out.
That's what I've been reading lately--the Merom is supposed to be a simple swap for the Yonah. I'm feeling even better about my 8204....

I went from the Sony SZ to the Ferrari 4006 and didn't notice a signficant change in battery life for general note taking while using wifi and browsing.

The only complaint I have about my 4006 is that there isn't enough Windows XP x64 support and the screen's viewing angle isn't that spectacular for being Acer's flagship. Other than that...it's beautiful and I get compliments all the time.

Maybe this is the reason in Australia we don't get the 64bit windows. Even the 4006 only comes with XP pro 32bit.

I don't see what you're debating. If you need gaming power then the 8204 is the obvious choice. I would have gotten it instead of this 4006 but it was out of my budget.
