8886 spdif problems

anyone have any suggestions for using spdif out to stereo speakers instead of using headphone jack to stereo speakers?

enabled spdif in bios and have most current audio drivers as per this forum (winxp).

when viewing audio prop. spdif is greyed out and also in advance tone controls are greyed out so I have no control. also when plugging speakers into y cable get no sound.

bottom line is audio sounds muted like listening to audio through thin pillow. audio quality is terrible.

thoughts, suggestions?

cheers,
Kirk

well, the spdif sends an encoded digital signal that can only be decoded by an AC-3 decoder -- such as on a home theater receiver. you will not be able to plug in an analog speaker set or headphone to get sound as there is no analog signal sent.

Get these speakers:

http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2....cid=25639&fp=F

They sound awesome, overstock.com is a great vendor, and they're the cheapest THX speakers I've ever seen.

Since it's digital, there's no interference either.

Thanks Yale. And sorry everyone.

Oh well, they're great speakers. I searched long and hard for cheap/good speakers w/ an on-board AC# decoder so that I could use the S/PDIF. These were the best value that I found. I found them other places for a few more bucks.

Great speakers cheap!

Okay, I bought a pair of Altec Lansing ACS-56W speakers for $42 at http://www.compuplus.com/insidepage.php3?&id=1000418 and they work great!!! No more thumping noise coming from the hard drive in my 8887. All I did was enable SPDIF output in my bios and hooked up the speakers with included cord and away it went! $42 brand new!!! Can you believe it?

Great tip.... Altec Lansing for $42 plus shipping. Best deal I've seen around. Just got them yesterday and they sound great and no computer noises coming through them.

Again great tip!
