Standby mode

Thread Starter
Since reinstalling Windows XP on my XPS 2, I am getting random "hangs" (screen going black, but the power is on even though cap locks etc. are not responding) when trying to enter standby mode. I did install latest utilities from dell.

Any ideas?

One of your processes is taking too long to switch to idle so that Windows can enter Standby.

Got the same issue once in a while.

How do you find out, which process it is?
The information I get about services and processes from control panel don't really help.

When it hangs during shutdown-to-standby, try hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del quickly to give you enough time to glance at the Process list and see which process is above 0% CPU usage.

Doesn't really work, unfortunately.
Task Manager either doesn't open or shows several processes above 0%.

I think i had this problem a while ago and i narrowed it down to my virtual drives/program for it Alcohol 120% was messing up when an image was mounted. Could prob also happen to daemon tools. I ended up uninstalling it and getting the newest version.

Donno if this helps but it could help someone.

Yes. Does help, of course! At least, it gives me another idea.

I'm not running the programs you have, but your mentioning "virtual drives" makes me think about PowerQuest Drive Image, which always keeps a process (pqv2isvc.exe) running on my machine, even when the program itself is not in use.

As soon as I have the time, I'll try getting rid of this process. I think it keeps track of the things that happen on the drives you made backups from. But I don't really see, why this is necessarily done all the time.

Maybe killing this process (pqv2isvc.exe) changes something to the better.
