Way to disable or fix XP login prompt?

Login has been enabled in XP. The problem is the person forgot the password. Thus they can't log on.

I suggested to try:
1. boot windows in Safe mode then try to disable XP login prompt or search Registry for login/password info
2. boot PC into bios and try to disable login >> If this is viable, is this in network area?
3. call HP and see if they have suggestion
4. Reload XP image from HP CD

Am I wrong with the above? Any other way to get disable login?

Login with another administrator user, if there is one. If not fresh install time.

easiest way to fix it. An indispensible tool in any network technician's toolbox (usually carry floppy and cd versions...need to get it on my jump drive)

You can also try booting into safe mode and logging into the Administrator account (if the Administrator password is known or blank). Once you log in as the Administrator, you can remove passwords from any accounts through the control panel.

Try this. scans and tells you what the password is, instead of resetting and thereby possibly locking you out of EFS encrypted files.

Yeah, my bet is that the Administrator password is blank, which is the default setting. Most users aren't experienced enough and/or don't care enough to change it, so you could probably get in that way.

you can delete the SAM file from C:\windows\system32\config

Then you will be able to login w/o a password. I'm not sure if you can use it with the XP cd by booting into windows (R) repair/recovery consol. I know for sure that you can use a bootdisk that allows NTFS write access.

you can reinstall windows without formatting.. all files will remain on the drive except for documents and programs.

Thx for the responses. Booting into safe mode and using the default admin login/pass fixed the problem.
