My 8204 has Arrived

First off I want to say that I am now proudly posting on the Acer section instead of the Sager...

I just got my 8204 in the mail (from newegg.com) and I have to say that although this is the sweetest looking and performing laptop I have ever owned, I am also pretty dissapointed with the brightness of the screen. I would be able to deal with it but I also have these black splotches on the bottom 2 corners of the screen. It bugs me because I really notice them all the time...I'm willing to live with them there, I'm just afraid that it's an indication that I have a bad screen. When I adjust the LCD (like when opening the laptop), I get ripples during the very brief time it sets into place (while the panel is slowly rocking back and forth). Actually, I just get ripples anytime I adjust the screen. Any help would be appreciated. Should I send the computer back before I go crazy installing software or should I just live with it these minor issues. Is there a new batch of screens? If so, how can I tell if mine is part of the old batch? Thanks a lot in advance.

Mine definitely does not have black splotches or ripples. The brightness is subjective - I am perfectly happy with mine.
Unfortunately though it looks like you have a faulty screen, I would send it back. If the faults are that noticeable I am sure it would drive you mad in the end.

Yeah, just to be SUPER clear. When I press gently on the back of the screen I get ripples all over. Where did you buy yours?

The black splotches are less than the size of an eraser head but definitely will bug me forever.

Anyone else have these problems? Anyone else buy from newegg.com?

I'm in the UK - had the machine 2 weeks now.
I have to press fairly hard on the back of my screen to get ripples and then they are fairly local. If I tap, or adjust my screen, I get no ripples.

I am tapping the back of my screen and I am getting no ripples. The LCD is wobbling back and forth about a centimeter and its not rippling at all. ALthough I do have the little black splotch in the bottom right corner, next to the clock. goes in about 3mm

Thanks for all the replies, I think it's pretty clear to me now that I have to return it. I'm def getting an immediate replacement though, as I absolutely love everything about the computer except for the damn splotches and rippling. I'll ask newegg if they've had returns on the 8204. I just hope it's not their batch that's bad and I'll have to go through this again in a few days. Again, an amazing computer despite my troubles.

I wish you the best of luck,

Here's the update...def worth sharing with the board. I called newegg to tell them about the problem. They said I'd have to take it up with Acer because the item is "warranted through the product manufacturer only" - When I described the symptoms to Acer, they informed me that the LCD might be cracked somewhere and causing the defects. Cracked LCDs are not covered by the Acer warranty. They told me I should call back newegg and tell them essentially that it's their problem (by the way, the Acer guy was really cool and helpful. Told me that even if newegg refused to cooperate, they'd gladly pay for me to ship the computer in to an Acer repair facility and check out the problem and see if they could help). I called newegg back and after explaining the steps that lead me up to the current call, a very nice woman issued me my option of a refund or a replacement (even though the item is "warranted through the product manufacturer only"). So that's taken care of. All I need to do now is wait for email instructions on returning the computer to newegg and i will get my full refund (including shipping).

As I am really excited to get my hands on this computer, I asked the woman what she thought would be the quickest way to get a new computer. She said that I should get a refund...that way I can just order a new computer right now and then get my money back when I send the other one in.

So yeah, I'm happy...sorry for the long post but I'm not sure I could be any happier with how both newegg and acer have handled my issue. Just wanted to let everyone know that newegg and acer are both kickass companies. Now if only they could send me a computer without splotches in the corners.

Where did everyone get their 8204's in the US? I don't want this to happen again!

I got mine, delivered today, from PC Connection online. I have a commercial account so saved $100 from the advertised price. I've always had a great luck buying from them, no matter what the issue... pricing is usually competitive, but not rock bottom - I'll take that over poor service any day !

Are you sure your screen defect isn't actually part of the "lozange" effect of taskbar? I have what looks like a "dirty" corner but if I move my head over a bit it disappears... I think it's just part of the graphic effect of the Taskbar.

As for ripples, I've got ripples if I press on the back of the screen, but so what? How is that going to hurt anything? Most laptop screens will ripple under pressure, what's variable is how much. I certainly wouldn't go to the bother of returning this system which is fine in every other way (so far) because of the rippling... tapping the back of the screen isn't something I do much.

Brighter would be better - that's something I'd notice every minute. But for those considering this machine the screen is plenty bright for normal use, and I bet it was designed this way to improve battery life...

No, I used a monitor test program that displays different colors/tones/patterns over the entire surface area of the LCD. You can see the splotches in all of the program's tests.

The rippling doesn't just occur when i press on the back of the LCD. It happens when I adjust the LCD (move it forward or backward). Strong vibrations near the computer even generated some rippling. I've owed many laptops in my life, and I know that it's not normal.

The brightness issue I can deal with, I was just assuming the brightness issue I was having was related to a defective monitor (because of the splotches and rippling). I might just order again from newegg. I never buy any computer products from anywhere else, but I'm hoping that the issue isn't related to newegg having a bad batch of 8204's.

What did you use to test? I think I have some blotching as well, but I'm also beginning to think it goes away somewhat as the backlight heats up (or, whatever a backlight might do that improves the image at some time after booting up).

Thanks for that... I ran the application, and didn't notice anything glaring in my screen. Not that I'd definitely know what to look for, but nothing jumped out at me.

Yea I used that as well.

You're right, that's NOT normal: I just tried banging hard on my desk and got the Acer to bounce without any ripples. The more I play with the lid, however, the more I think it's pretty flimsy after all. Maybe carbon fibre is strong, but it sure isn't very stiff.

I deal with carbon fibre quite a lot in my work and we use it to make things light and stiff (I'm talking really stiff) so I have to wonder how much carbon fibre is actually in the lid. It's quite possible that there is just one layer of carbon on top of other composite materials lay-up or maybe just stuck on top of a plastic lid for cosmetic purposes. I'm pretty sure it's not what I would call a full carbon construction.

Please run this http://www.lavalys.com/news.php?arti...cat=PR&lang=en and tell us what model of display you have. I have LTN154P1-L02 which doesnt have splodges but does have the grey lines problem.

LTN154P1-L02 for me. Black splotches in corners.

From reading this thread, and testing my notebook some more, I'm pretty worried now whether my screen is normal or not.
(Well probably, it isn't normal.)

I definitely have the black splotches on the lower left and right corners. Which are more noticeable for me because I use the "classic" theme.

And I now see the ripples that occur even for small motions like adjusting the LCD screen angle, or just rocking the notebook.

It seems solid gray is the best color to see all the problems of the screen.
So try saving this GIF image and viewing it fullscreen with an image viewer:
http://www.viquagames.com/notebook/solid.gif (2kb 1680x1050 solid gray gif)

Then try adjusting the lcd angle and rocking the notebook around. For me ripples can definitely be seen to the left and the right of the screen.

Light leakage is visible, and the dark blotches at the bottom corners are also visible.

Problem is I've had this notebook more than a week! .. Not sure what I can do.
