9400/E1705 7800GTX Go venture - Page 4

Mr K6, I just took apart my 9300 to look at both of my 7800gtx's and neither of them has a standoff attached. Swapping heatsinks wouldn't provide enough cooling and will be unneccesary since there isn't anything in the way there.

As for the Go7800 power consumption compared to the 7800gtx... that is why the BIOS must be modded in both video and power areas. This will be a tough obstacle without a CoreDuo XPS BIOS to work with.

Asian, without seeing the inside of the (yet unavailable) I6400D we cannot begin to compare and see if the x1400 would fit. Just because Dell is offering the old x300 in the I6400 doesn't mean the x1400 from the I6400 will work in the I6000.

Ahh righto, they all have the cut out. Hmm.. should be easy then as long as the heatsink for the GTX fits. As I said before, you can easily swap heatsinks, you'll just have to run the GTX at lower voltage. With luck, someone will mod a BIOS for the mod .

And if they're offering the old part in the new laptop, that definitely gives hope though .

Old part in the new laptop??? Which part and what laptop are you referring to? Are you deprived of sleep? You're usually much clearer with what the hell you're talking about! LOL

I think he's referring to -

anyone know for sure if that is going to be a problem or not ?
Relic,

That is the "standoff/peg" I was referring to. The 7800GTX will be just above that that peg. The peg itself - judging from the line-up of the two boards - does not look like it will be a problem for the 7800GTX.

The confirmed problem is cutting away the metal located at the left rear vent, then sanding it smooth. This guarantees a voided warranty, so it won't be an "invisibly reversible" mod this time around on the 9400.

No, it's not an answer to my earlier question, but he's saying that if they offer the GTX as it is now into the e1705, then we don't have to worry about anything.

Actually, it was a reference to your previous inquiry regarding the X1400 in the 6000; sorry, you're right I am usually much clearer, just not at 1 AM .

I looked at these photos after I had actually gotten some sleep and it won't work. The two cards are physically incompatible, check this out:

That top peg is in a different place on each card, the cut outs will not line up. Also, the bottom peg looks off too. Also, as JaxChris mentioned, there might be some incompatiblity with the heatsink fitting (the GTX's heatpipe is larger). Anywaym one would have to do some serious modification to get the GTX in there. Cutting away two pegs might interfer with the structural integrity of the laptop, but for your braves ones, try it out I guess

actually, that is the screw hole for the right side of the keyboard. i took a look of a better picture of the 7800 GTX without heat sink, it appears that you would need to trim your 7800 GTX card, which I think possible because it appears to contain nothing but green trim.

all the talk about trimming the left corner of the laptop for the heatsink, i dont believe you need to, looking at my right corner heat sink the heat pipe would be above the plastic piece.

we need to get a picture top view of the 7800 GTX with and without heatsink, we can gauge if we can trim the card or be forced to remove the screw hole for the keyboard on the board.

Mr K6, thanks for that upclose pic. That wasn't clear to see in the previous pictures. That peg along the top edge will make it incompatible. Any chance of convincing you to remove the mobo and flip it over to see if those pegs are just screwed in from the back (removable)??

Stukov... I'm not sure if you're familiar with engineering PCB's, but if you cut a finished PCB with anything short of a good laser, you will flex the surrounding areas on the PCB and break internal circuits - rendering the original card useless.

chances of this working look slim I guess if you want the gtx you're going to have to pick up a xps m170 or an i9300 from the dell outlet

mr9865, don't give up just yet. If those pegs are just screwed into the back of the mobo then they can be removed in 2 mins and it gets rid of that problem. =)

This guy on ebay is saying you can upgrade your 9400/E1705 to the 7800gtx.

eBay is just about the last place I'd look for quality info . Being that there are pegs in the way, that's not so much and issue because they can easily be cut off (I don't think they're screwed in, but rather formed with the back plate, I'll check though). Yes though, I wouldn't go into sanding the PCB, the vibrations themselves are enough to kill the card.

I guess the main issue here is that it will be pain in the ass to get the GTX into an E1705. With luck, the 7900GTX part will come out and Dell will use it in the XPS model based on the E1705, making this whole conversion a hell of a lot easier . Anyway, I'll look into this more, I'll be taking my laptop apart some time this week for my other projects .

Who would want 2 expresscards? Well someone who was using any two of the folllowing:

An expresscard based soundblaster (there will be one)
A 3rd party network card for higher wireless network connections
E-SATA ports on such a card

I can easily see using the first 2, so yes 2 expresscard ports would be useful.

However other design issues exist in that mockup as you mentioned

Well Java... all that proves is that we have a severe idiot here in the forums that is selling stuff on eBay and trying to improperly quote our hard work spent in figuring out these issues.

Obviously he is an idiot... because he's telling 9400 owners to flash their Core Duo BIOS with a Pentium-M BIOS.

This guy doesn't know jack. If I were ever going to seriously flame a person... it would be people that do shit like that. Providing people a completely false representation of what we try to accomplish here - just so he can make a stupid buck! I hope the winner pays with a stolen CC and he gets the money taken out of his PayPal account after he's already shipped the card to someone. Won't happen - but it's a nice thought and it makes me smile for now! =)
