I can easily see using the first 2, so yes 2 expresscard ports would be useful.

However other design issues exist in that mockup as you mentioned
All I want to see out of ExpressCard is an EVDO Broadband Card that will work on Sprint or Verizon!!! Until then, every Core Duo laptop Dell comes out with is useless for my work. =(

Don't feel bad guys, if I had to put money on it, I'd say that the 7800 GTX will be the last video card to fit in the 9300/XPS M170. After that you'll be getting all the new goodies.
Yeah EVDO would be handy. But I'd group that with item #2 a 3rd party network card, that also did EVDO.

Good thinking though - mobile means MOBILE

Anemone... I have mobile broadband now... but ExpressCard adoption isn't a priority to anybody in the WWAN OE channel right now. It should've been one of the first cards available to help businesses adopt the new technology. =(

This guy doesn't know jack. If I were ever going to seriously flame a person... it would be people that do shit like that. Providing people a completely false representation of what we try to accomplish here - just so he can make a stupid buck! I hope the winner pays with a stolen CC and he gets the money taken out of his PayPal account after he's already shipped the card to someone. Won't happen - but it's a nice thought and it makes me smile for now! =)
Amen

The 7800GTX is probably going to be the last card for the 9300/XPS2/M170, but I'm hoping a new XPS will come out that will have a kick ass card that can be jimmied into the 9400/E1705.

Also, just because creative isnt offering one NOW doesn't mean it will never offer one. If express cards are a new format that will become universal, creative will have to comply to sell a product. Also, that representative might not have all the info (probably only official announcements).

Actually... look at how much Creative currently cares about the laptop market. They really don't. They've moved well past the Audigy 2 platform and still have not even released hints to the press that they are preparing a successor to the Audigy PC Card. People are getting more and more accepting of on-board sound. This is making Creative push to be far superior to on-board sound, even in the desktop market. This is why for the first time Creative offers a "Sound Blaster" on-board sound option for motherboard makers. Eventually a Creative on-board sound option for laptop motherboards will surface. But looking that Creative is trying to be a "premium brand" again with the new X-Fi cards, the chance of them cramming that much into a PC Card or ExpressCard (have you seen just how fully used the space on an X-Fi card is?) is highly unlikely.

Besides, USB2 external devices are highly more likely from Creative. It works on desktops and covers the needs of laptop DJ's and lan party gamers. And if you look at ExpressCard, it uses a USB2.0 connection to most motherboards, and PCI-Express x1 on some. This means that ExpressCard will not provide greater bandwidth than a USB2.0 device. Imagine the additional cost involved to pack an X-Fi into an ExpressCard/34 form factor over putting the X-Fi desktop PCB into a USB enclosure.

Btw... we are really going OFF TOPIC in a thread that has very good intentions for the 9400 users. Sorry I added to it there... I just realized what thread I was in. So let's get back on track here people. =)

I would definitely wait awhile before doing anything permanent to your 9400's. From the pics, it looks like the 9400 has the same gap in front of the cpu cooling fins as the 9300 had....and that became the XPS2, with the 6000u. I doubt Dell would leave that gap for nothing.

It looks like it would be a nice place to put the second set of cooling fins for a 7900GTX.

The release of the 7900 is only a few days away. I think the 7800 will be old news pretty soon. If your 7800go plays at least as well as my 6800u, I think it shouldn't be too hard to suffer a little wait.

Well, the release of the desktop 7900 is a few days away. I'd bet it's a few months before seeing a notebook version.

Nvidia is natorius (spelling) for only releasing 1 mobile every new generation (as in 6x, 7x, 8x, however, the 7900 being a 90 nm part is cheaper for nvidia to produce. I would see it unlikely they would want to keep producing the 7800 GTX Go at 130 nm just because they dont want to release a new laptop card.

With this being said, I believe for the time being I am going to wait and see if the 7900 GTX Go comes. If Dell waits to release the new XPS model for Memrom, it would be harder for us to overcome Bios issues (if they exist, still waiting for someone to officially try the 7800 GTX go in 9400). If, however if the 7800/7900 in the new XPS comes in the updated chipset/chassis/etc as the 9400 it would much easier for us owners to upgrade, rather than probably doing some slight modification to get the GTX to fit perfectly (due to current assesment that the top right screw hole for the keyboard may be in the way with the PCB).

Still need someone to take closeup screenshot of the GTX without the heatsink.

I am currently happy enough with my 7800 Go overclocked with the 1.3 voltmod. Sadly sometimes I have heat issues (at max clocks) and the psu craps out. I believe I am going to purchase the 130 w psu from ebay, but does anyone know any way to better cool the card? Change heatsink of the GTX? Ideas?

The tech market is moving faster and faster each year. It seems very ominous that Dell would wait this long and not release an XPS flagship model in conjunction to the 9400 high-end model. Obviously, Dell did not see Yonah as a big enoug deal to design a new model, so I'd imagine something else is coming, and new, high-end video is probably it. Now this very well could be the 7900, so I would wait it out guys and see what unfolds before you hack apart your laptops .

/me drops the hacksaw.

Aww....

Great advice in this thread, I for one will be waiting until the new XPS based on the E1705 comes out.

You sure about this? Only ONE per generation/series?

So the 6200, 6400, 6600, 6600MXM, 6800, and 6800 Ultra are ONE card?

And the 7300, 7400, 7600, 7800, and 7800GTX are ONE card also?

Nvidia has done a very good job of offering a wide variety of solutions for notebooks of different intended uses. In fact they release mobile GPU's that don't even have desktop counterparts. They fit the niche's that OEM's need in products.

Also, in regards to a newer XPS laptop. Remember that Dell changed the XPS2 to the XPS m170 in mid year... expect the same or later for the next model.

Plus, if they are planning to roll out that 20" hybrid... expect a huge XPS change over to happen in a very short time. The Renegade will be the first bomb they drop for obvious reasons... but in the mobile arena I'd expect them to do all the XPS launches after the Inspiron change over is complete.

I don't know that I think it's likely, but the mobility radeon x1800 (M58) just got announced in a product. (Eurocom M570U Divine) It's a pretty standard 17incher with core duo. Apparently they are going to release a mobility x1900 soon as well, and if that follows through on the 16/48 pipeline thing like the desktop version, it could be pretty rockin....

I don't consider an article from the inquirer a very credible source personally.
Well, FWIW dailytech is also reporting the Eurocom with X1800 GPU:

(but personally I like the inquirer more than dailytech.... I've found them more reliable generally)
