My lappy at max bright cant compare to my desktop LCD. Why?

I know power ssaving is an issue, but even when im plugged in it isnt as good.

Are laptop backlights vs desktop backlights totally different animals?

Weight is also a factor, and the components that can produce the type of light output on the desktop display may be both too powe hungry and heavy for the application. Also, size of the components may be a factor.

Yeah, backlights in desktop LCDs and TVs are much higher wattage. In fact, LCD TVs consume almost as much power as CRTs due to the backlight.

A Dell 17" desktop LCD runs, on average, 55 W. An average laptop battery has about 50 to 90 WHr.

The math doesn't look good, does it?

Something's gotta give.

dellbert, how does your new laptop screen compare with the Sony A6xx? Sony screens are oh so nice, and the price are not.

Eh, I haven't done a side-by-side comparison, but I no longer have Sony envy.

With Dell's pricing, you sort of set your expectations at "good enough." Everything about this laptop exceeds those expectations, including the LCD.

Apples new MacBook Pro displays are as bright as the 20" Cinema Displays. The new MacBook displays are 300 nits.

you can't really judge the brightness by the spec sheet. Often times, they don't match up with reality. Try using a hardware profiler and check it yourself. I have 4 Samsungs 19" LCD's that don't measure up to spec. But my Dell 2405, holy cow, that thing is BRIGHT. I can't even target it to 140, as I remember it, min was around 155-160. Anyway, point is, don't trust the specs.
