Small, tiny laptop. subnetbook. Which brand?

Hello,...(subnotebook, not subnetbook )

I know quite alot about laptops, but it's a jungle out there finding the one meeting my needs.

Here goes the priority:

1. Small in size, between ~5 - 11" screen. Keyboard doesn't have to be 100% size.

2. Light. Around 1 kg or less (1.5 kg max).

3. Slow. That's right, I'm only planning on using it for web/e-mail/chat/mp3 and watching divx while traveling. 3-400 MHz is enough with ffdshow codec for divx.

4. Price. Affordable second hand price. I can always buy a new battery later.

5. PCMCIA. 1 cardplace is enough. I figure an older laptop doesn't come with inbuilt wi-fi, that's what I need it for.

6. HDD doesn't have to be big, 4 GiB and above is enough.

7. Linux compatible, but this I can always look into later.

Probably won't include cd/floppy station, but that's OK. 1 USB is enough so I get something booting and installing over network. 800x600 resolution is also enough.

I'm thinking small small small

So, got any laptop in mind

Thanks,

I'm searching for the same thing, and after a little bit of research I've narrowed it down to an IBM 240x...

500mhz
12gigHD
192 max RAM
10.24" x 7.96" x 1.06"

Around $200-$250 on ebay.

Look at the IBM X21. I know that i can pick them up for around $200-300. Japanese keyboard layout though.

Of all the used notebooks that i've seen (that are as old as the one you are looking for) IBM seems to be the most. They are solid notebooks.

I considered the X21 as well, but in the end I decided that it wasn't small enough. Small siize was my main objective for this laptop, and the X21's 11" x 8.9" dimensions just didn't cut it for me.

The 240x is about .75 inches smaller width wise and 1 inch smaller depth wise.

The alienware Sentia's are nice

Yes they are...I got my Sentia 2 weeks ago.

However, while it is small, I wouldn't consider it to be "tiny" at 11.5" x 9".

Have a look at the Fujitsu P1120 and P2120

Thanks

Thanks for all replies.

So far I've looked on the ibm 240x, seems nice!
I will look at the other once you suggested today.

And I also found another one :
Toshiba Libretto 110CT / PA1280xx
Processor MMX Pentium 233MHz
Memory(MAX) 32MB(64MB)
HDD 4.3GB
Display 7.2inch WideTFT 800x480
Display controller NeoMagic MagicGraph 128XD (NM2160)
Video RAM 2MB
Sound Yamaha OPL3-SAx
Weight: about 910 g. Less then 1 kg!
Dimension: 210 x 132 x 34 mm , now that's small!
Price: Around 100£ or 140 EUR on e-bay.

There's also Libretto ff 1100V, but only sold in japan. It has 266Mhz/128MB/6.4GB/USB + inbuilt camera if I'm not misstaken (woo!).

Question is, will it run divx? I'm looking into that now. I will run Linux and ffdshow seems like a nice codec. I'm thinking of re-encoding them to fit smaller screen/less resolution on my stationary computer.

Google for pictures.

I had a Libretto 110 back around '99. I ran Linux on it and used a Spider CDPD PCMCIA modem. Ran XFree with FVWM very well. There are decent, albeit old, resources on the web for installing Linux on it. Sounds like exactly what you are looking for.

I used it for remote Solaris and Oracle administration, and web browsing, irc, pine, etc. It really freed me up for work availability. Its the size of a VHS tape, so I could take it everywhere and always be available.

I gave mine up when I left work. I should look into buying another one, actually.

Excellent! Back in the 90's I ran fvwm2, going back to the roots . The 110ct doesn't have a usb though does it? Anyway, as long as it has pcmcia so I can run a wifi card, I suppose there's a combo card with ethernet rj-45 and wifi?!

No onboard usb, but the docking station has it, and maybe ethernet too. The 110 itself has two stacked PCMCIA slots, so you have more options there.

If you would want to install Windows, it originally came with 98, which sucks, but I had success NT 3.5.1 and 4.0 on it.

The libretto is great, I'm going to start looking for one here.

I wouldn't want to use anything smaller than 12", you'd be better off with a PDA.
