Would You like 8886 and 8887 would have a DVD burner ?

I think would be great an option to buy right now a DVD burner inside as bay device, nor just buy an external, you will not have to carry it out by separate. What do you think !!!

I hope DVD will came soon, will be at least 4X(DVD write), DVD-RAM ready (9.X GB), and be a CD-R/RW ready too !! this are my wishes. You can read Adam said DVD burner will be ready soon, but Vote, it can help them to decide themselves.

if its a good reasonable price...i'd consider it...i dont know i'd prefer to have something like the DRU-500a which does
DVD-/+RW so i can burn anything and everything. THats just a personal thing, if im gonna spend 300 bucks on something i figure its worth it to go all out and spend a bit more.

i also would like 5660 to have DVD-burner/RW

Me too

I would also pay for a DVD/RW in my 8887.

me too

Not yet!!

I dont think the speed that they have currently justifies the extra cost - it is not yet time...

I think it's better to wait until the formats sort themselves out...

Cheers.

I believe a DVD burner in a laptop would be great. Think about the future when you start to run out of hard drive space... simply place some files on a DVD and keep going. I have a lot of files (directories) on my home PC that are too big for a CD-R but would be just right for a DVD because they all be put on 1 CD.

I think cost will be a factor but a good DVD burner would be worth extra money for me... if within my budget or a little over.

Also, backups would be easier as well.

Yes but...

It would be great for backups but look at the price - I am positive its gonna be like a 150 - 200 dollar hike over the current laptop price - Maybe more...

In which case - as we all have seem harware evolution over the past few years - it would be prudent to wait a while till they sort things out and improve the write speeds...

Anyone have any datasheets on them as far as DVD R's are concerned??

I would pay the price. I think a Sager would make a fine desktop replacement... but it is hard to drop in an extra hard drive.

I would make the investment.

This is somewhat about what we are talking about:

i wouldn't because if i was thinking about getting a dvd burner i would get 1 of the usb 2.0/1.1 /firewire sony's that'll write all formats and i could use on my desktop too.. besides the fact that it's cheaper then the laptop dvd burner option ive seen out there, eurocom offers 1 for 600 and while i know they are about the most expensive sager reseller out there you can probaly expect it wont be more then 200 off from another 1 when its available.. and it's only a 1x burner(Yes I know dvd burning speeds are alot faster then cd-r forget the specs though(top out there is 4x now for dvd i believe though) and it only records 1 format, the sony burns at 4x for all dvd formats and will also burn cd-rs at 24x.. Yes it requires a ac power adapter but for the use id have for a dvd burner thats fine..

I dunno, I think we should wait. Just like Yale said, the formats need sorting out (been doing that for 5 years...) and when that happens, the price of equipment will drop too. Don't DVD-R discs cost $30 a piece? I'd wait until the prices drop...

Aren't dvd-r disks like $30? No, if you look on the internet, you can buy blank name disks (in a 100 spindle like cds) for around 60-80 cents each.
Ack! How long ago was DVD-r's $30? I feel so antiquated...

You're right, a quick check revealed extremely good prices on media. I guess their prices dropped when I wasn't looking...

Still, there's about 4 different standards, and not all tv dvd players can play the discs written by the new drives. These standards are what really need fixing.

There are a few reasons why I have yet to buy a dvd burner. The first reason, and probably most important , is they are very expensive. Remember when cd-rw drives first gained popularity? Well, if the dvd burner follows the same path we should be able to expect a major price drop, and speed increase soon. The other issue I have with DVD writing is the multiple "standards." Until the industry develops an official, and accepted, standard I might think twice about getting a dvd burner.

I would have to agree with Infinity on this one that external sony dvd burner is one of the best on the market right now because it supports alot of formats ,pioneer makes one just as good to I believe, but dont get me wrong I would love to have a Dvd burner in my lappy so I guess I would probably wait until they improve the write speeds and different formats that you can burn at before I would buy one.

Well, granted im not willing to fork over the cash yet, and yes, they are alreaday on a price decline, they've dropped almost $200 since the summer. But i do not see a problem with formats. The Sony DRU-500a does all formats, and as long as you use the right one for the right reason, your fine.

if my memory serves me right, the -RW is for making home movies, and can be played in ANY dvd player, and the +RW is for archiving, and storage. Therei s another standard out there that is corporate use, and their disc's are huge and what not, but its not really a commercial option.

So simply put, if you wanna backup your DVD collection, you use -rw if you want to backup your computer you use +rw. Pretty simple to me, i dont mind having different formats, especially when the prices are down to about a buck a pieece individually. Hell a dollar for 4.5 GB vs, buying all the cd's to get that much space (im too lazy to do the calcs) i think its worth it. toms hardware had a great review of dvd burners, i suggest ya'll check it out. www.tomshardware.com

Actually the rw is rewriteable and i dont beleive you can use rewriteables in dvd players, but i think you are right in the -r are for movies that'll play in dvd player and -r is for backups.. correct me if im wrong..
