Excelent choice, since all issues with dvd formats would no longer represent a problem with that drive.
However, i'm not aware of the existence of that particular burner for laptops.

Thought others might like to read... away out.. but still a *very* nice thought to have in about 2 or 3 years.

Actually, the original post referred to an internal drive, so "technically" i'm correct.

But the sony was listed as a cheaper alternative.. so it still fits.. I dont think many people will be burning a dvd where they cant plug into a ac outlet...

I agree on the external drives. If I had to have a dvd burner, that's what I'd get... I could then use it on ANY computer (lol, cuz any computer that could handle a burner program pretty much has either USB1/2/firewire... Plus, I definitely won't be burning dvds on battery power... so an AC outlet nearby would be no problem. The main thing is it supports all formats, so if they standardize I won't get stuck with the wrong format (like the good old VHS tapes vs sony whatever they were called....)

ahhh yeah the famous vhs vs. betamax

Lots of people got burned going for what was percieved(and i think possibly was, no expert since i was a wee lad at the time) as the best tech. and then being left with betamax players that cost 1000+ dollars but were pretty much worthless

You know, I was always under the impression that VHS came after Betamax. Didn't it simply kind of replace an older format?

Cheers.

No they both pretty much came out at the same time..the first betamax recorders were offered in 1975 and the first vhs recorders came in 1976 which considering everything is about the same time... http://www.urbanlegends.com/products/beta_vs_vhs.html

Jesus! 27 years for VHS!? I don't think even the floppy is that old.

Cheers.

I think it's because the DVD writers are at 1x right now for laptops that its just not practical for the laptop.

Don't even ask how old Cassette Tapes (circa 1964) or Laser Disc (circa 1978).

So there. If you're REALLY interested in this stuff, then check this out...

Also, BETAMAX is still in wide-spread use in the broadcasting world (news, shows, etc.) however, not for long.

I think you mean BETACAM - a distant, broadcast quality relative of the Betamax format. It's also likely to be around for quite a while yet!

DVD burner device

Hello guys, first of all, thank you all of you have been writting to this threat.

I was searching on available external DVD drives and I am thinking on this, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD-R, CD-RW External Drive from LaCie, I think it is All compatible but

I want you to tell me, what do you think about it ? Do you think it is all compatible as possible ?

Would you buy this one from all of the rest DVD burners you have been looking ?

Thanx

Two things abot this:

1) Sony DRX500ULX is better because it has "+" and "-" compatible formats, and
2) It is buffer underrun protection

NOTE: I guess Sony is not DVD-RAM (double side 9.6GB) ready !!!!

Do you think Sony is better than i suggested above (LaCie) ?????

Here are some specs about LaCie DVD burner:

capacity 4.7GB
write (DVD-R) 4x
re-write (DVD-RW) 2x
read (DVD-ROM) 12x
write (CD) 16x
re-write (CD) 8x
read (CD) 32x
Interface FireWire & USB2.0
loading system: tray

Sounds cool, is not it ?

LaCie is big in the MAC world. They've been boxing up cheap PC drives and selling them for top dollar to mac users for years...

Still do not know who actually makes the drive they sell, but I'll bet it's cheap.
