Wireless Range Help

Im getting a laptop with the latest wireless technology. One of my best friends lives almost directly across the street from me, I can see his house from mine. (across the street 2 houses to the right)

If I were to bring the laptop over his house would it be possiable to stay connected to the web? If not is there a specail router that has a type of boost that would allow it to go that far?

I do not think you will get that range...only way to get that to work is to use a cellular internet service...thus you can use it anywhere you have a cell signal....from a router, even with a boster and I have one...max is about 3-400 ft...here is a link to Linksys...you can encode your transmission so only you can use it....

I use this one from linksys

I get about half on the windows signal meter two houses down from mine (which is all brick). This is with my MJ-12 though. When I had my old sony with a pcmcia card it wouldn't even pick it up. It is possible though. I seen awhile back that linksys was marketing an outdoor access point, not sure if they can be bought through retail but it's another option to look into (sorry I can't find the link to them). I am very amazed at the power of the built in Atheros card in my Alienware laptop. I get 6 connections at home and 6 at my parents place in KC were my old laptop and desktop never showed any but the one I had set up.

P.S. - This is what I was think about. After some searching it seems to be very expensive, and I have no idea how well it works.

Dlink and Linksys sell external 7db gain antennas for their routers. You get that antenna and a matching router, put the antenna/router in your winfow and youll reachit just fine more than likely. Or go with the mimo stuff, it is supposed to have better range. One router than comes to mind because they preach the distance it works ar is the Belkin Pre-N router.

But you will NEED to get a external wireless adapter ina any rate. An internal minipci car dis not going to cut it.

My parents have a very large house in which I tried the Belkin Pre-N after reading great reviews on it. Well things just didn't work out well. It didn't have bad signal but would drop connection very often. I then took my router mentioned above with me one time just to test and, long story short it didn't make the several hundred mile trip back with me. It worked perfect and haven't had a single drop in over two months now. As for the internal pci card I can't say how happy I am with the one I have in mine. It is the Atheros chipset and gets signal that my other laptop and desktop can't get. My router is up at the top of my house in the attic, and with my lappy I can get signal throughout my neighborhood. But the antenna in the window trick should do you just fine like max said. So many things that can interfere with signal that you really just need to try out several different ones if possible. If not I swear by my above recommendation (best out of 12 I've owned, and it's the MIMO).

Yeah Best Buy has on their shelves the linksys 7gb gain anteana that you can put on their wireless routers. So aranging your setup with the route rnear the window and putting the external antenna in the window it should work. I think the 7db gain antenna has like a 3 foot cord.

I tried an atheros card in my m5700, it worked for normal surfing. But when I tried large file transfers it blue screened everytime. The sad part about the new m series is it doesnt have pcmcia slot's only pci-x-press slot. So most people options will be a usb wireless solution of sorts, for reliability anyways.

As said by hulioni, interference will be an issue sometimes. You will probably have some drops now and again.

ooops my bad read it wrong, yea you can buy an linksys extender. also get hacked firmware, though do it at your own risk. it will increase the range alot. another thing i would do is go to radioshack and pick up there extended wireless antennas.

You can get a directional antenna and aim it at your friend's house. Here is just one company that manufactures such things:

There are others available.
