My macbook pro gets HOT!

Yesterday I received my first mac, the 1.8 macbook pro. This thing packs a powerful punch, but it is as hot as the sun! I don't my way around OS Tiger yet, but is there any way to make this thing cool down? I mean, it needs a glass of lemonade or something....

Actually, pour a glass of lemonade on it and that'll cool it down. Or else you can get a notebook cooler to set it on (eBay).

Grease up the lid, throw on a slab of beef. "Grills up to 4x faster."

My Powerbook G4 gets burning hot too.

I use this when working on my lap:

And this on my desk with BT keyboard and mouse:

Well, I'm sure it gets around the same temp as do the PB 15". Since this is your first mac, you don't have anything to compare too.

Download Temperature Monitor and see how hot everything is getting inside. It's a universal app now so it should know how to read the sensors on the MacBook.

PowerBooks generally don't go over 140F when running at 100 percent.

Also too, because of the aluminium frame the whole computer acts as a heat sink so it does get warmer than a plastic frame. Even a thin layer of fabric between the computer and your lap will drastically reduce the heat you feel.

try and set your power settings to automatic. that way when unplugged the CPUs will be clocked down. also, what are u trying to do during lap use? if u only really use it plugged in then it will be running at full boar and be more likely to heat up. if u r doing only casual stuff on the lap when plugged in, just click on the battery icon up top and set it to a lower setting. if u r doing anything disk or CPU intensive like video editing or games u basically need a laptop stand of some sort. also, the more insulation in the fabric the notebook may be resting on the hotter it will make the notebook. i.e.-i can be casually using my iBook seemingly forever w/o it getting hot or the fans kicking on if i'm on the couch wearing jeans or whatnot. on the other hand if i'm kicking back in bed and have it resting on my lap on top of a down comforter the fans will kick on eventually.

let your computer breathe.

I downloaded hardware monitor as suggested, and for some reason the macbook pro only detects one temperature to read, and that is from "Smart Disk ST98823AS". I don't know if this alone will give me an accurate gauge of the system temperature, but right now it is at 102.2 degrees F. However, the heat that i feel now is is NOT close to how hot i've felt it in the past couple of days.

Does anyone get more than one temp reading from hardware monitor trial version on their macbook pro?

Download Temperature Monitor and see if that gives you the rest of the temperatures.

I just installed temperature monitor, and it only finds the one sensor. There seems to be no others available. Is everyone's macbook pro like this, or only mine?

I have a feeling it's everyone's. I guess they haven't been able to update all the sensors yet.

Mine is definitely a crotch-burner too.

My wife still uses an old TiBook 800Mhz G4, and its a hot one too. 1" thick does not give a lot of room to circulate air. Aesthetics requires few if any ventilation openings in Apple chassis so there is not many ways for the hot air to get out. All that equals a hot laptop.

Thick laptops may be ugly, but they cool much better than thin ones. My 2" thick Dell M70 stays nice and cool even when gaming. The fans rarely if ever come on. With the wife's powerbook, doing anything more strenuous than email and web surfing heats it up to the point that the fan comes roaring on every 3 minutes.

you could easily fry an egg on mine.

I went to the Apple store Thursday and checked them out. I really liked the machine except for the heat. That thing was not comfortable for being on your lap. Right at the back of the MBP close to the hinge was just on fire.

I took a look at the macbook today at the store, and i have to say, the machine was definetely warm. Its nothing like my friends thinkpad (its really all i have to compare to right now). It wasn't crotch-burning hot or anything, just really warm. I know I can use it in my lap, but it won't be all that comfortable in the summer, lol.

hows the noise level on the macbooks? my sager 4790 is probably the loudest computer in the world and theres no way im getting anything thats even close to that.

Mine's completely silent. I've never even heard a fan come on (even when it's crotch-burning warm).
