divx in linux, low-end hw.

Hello,

I'm thinking of buying a toshiba libretto 110ct, it has the following hw-setup:
Libretto 110CT / PA1280xx
Processor MMX Pentium 233MHz
Memory(MAX) 32MB(64MB)
HDD 4.3GB
Display 7.2inch WideTFT 800x480
Display controller NeoMagic MagicGraph 128XD (NM2160)
Video RAM 2MB
Sound Yamaha OPL3-SAx

I will probably run Slackware or maybe ubuntu.

But what about divx? ffdshow codec and mmx registers, will it be enough? I will re-encode to fit screen/resolution.

I was able to play divx movies with following HW using movix (special linux dist. to play multimedia file.)

P 233 Celeron
128M Ram.
20Gb Hdd.

celeron probably has lower cache memory and perhaps not mmx register? So it should work with p233 mmx. Only one way to find out for sure I guess...
Movix, will look into that distro.

The Celeron is probably a little better because I think they were based on the pentium II's. The regular p233 is gonna be based on the pentium 1.

You may wanna try a distro like Gentoo to squeeze out every ounce of performance possible. You definately don't want to be using gnome. You also may want to try out Damn Small Linux.

I think memory will probably hold you back, tho.

bigtrouble is right about CPU and Memory.
Celeron is based PII and better than P233 mmx. and also
I dont think 36Mb memory would be enough.

On the other hand, If I can play divx files on my nokia 6630 (files re-encoded for lower resulotion and quality), It would be also possible to do such thing on P233 mxx + 32Mb. What you need is just right software.
