Fried graphics card???

I have an onboard M10/M11 ATI Mobility Radeon 9600/9700 128MB graphics card. I just got the notebook used and did a fresh install of XP Pro.

I noticed under XP Pro the notebook won't play DVD video in either WMP, P-DVD, or Nero, WTF? Won't play from disc or from mounted .iso, I only get the very first few seconds of any DVD video then it freezes, the program then freezes, windows won't let me shut it down, then if I click anything I hear a motherboard beep and the mouse if frooze. At that point I have to manually shut it down

What could be wrong? Fried card with a bad MPEG decoder or what?

I can play other videos yes, like DivX AVI's for example I have on my HD. They play great.

I don't play games or own games so I couldn't tell you on that one...

Did you install the latest ATi drivers? The complete install (the 25MB packages) come with hardware accelerated DVD playback.

No I used the latest 6.2 Omega drivers. Maybe that's my problem?

Definently sounds like software and not a hardware issue. I would try the standard catalyst drivers, no need for omega really if your not gaming. You might download 3dmark and run it a couple times looped just to rule out overheating/hardware.

What can I download that can even tell me what temp my card is at?

did you order from winbook or some other seller?

No. Wouldn't matter if I did anyway since I flashed the BIOS, swapped the HD, upgraded the memory, and installed my own custom build of XP. Somehow I don't think a reseller would support that, lol. That and I've had Vista on it a couple times now too, lol...

i would say driver issue, do games play fine?

He doesn't play games...

maybe run 3dmark03 and see what the results are... compare them to other 9700's

Thanks for all of the help so far guys! I'm going to go home tonight and remove the Omega drivers, use DriverCleaner, and install the ATI drivers from their site. Then I'll reinstall Power-DVD and test DVD's. Then I'll run a benchmark and check that.

Wish I could see my GPU's temp though...

BTW, this is all on the ECS in my sig.

Well turns out the Omega 6.2 drivers were screwing it all up!

After installing the ATI drivers from my notebook maker that are dated 3/22/2004 and running 3DMark03 I got a score of 2821 on an M10 and yes my DVD's play perfectly now!

Is that a decent score?

You'd have to do a little research man... I'm unfamiliar with the way the 9700's perform
