Wireless Network Connection Icon Problem

Hi, I hope someone can help me, I would really appreciate it. All of the sudden now when I connect my I6000 to my cable internet connection via an Intel PROSet Wireless profile I have setup, the Wireless Network Connection icon will appear in my taskbar and show that it is acquiring the network address, but then as soon as it does, the icon will dissappear and NOT show my active connection icon as it normally does.

I'm not sure why it started doing this. In order to see it in my taskbar, I now have to go into the Wireless Network Connection properties and click to make the checkmark show up next to "Show icon in notification area when connected". Why isn't it remembering it anymore? It's worked for the whole 9 months I've had the laptop, and now everytime I boot up or restart the laptop, it forgets to show the icon when connected.

Not sure what I did, if it was me.

Yeah, it appears to be that way too. Only time will tell, I'll let this one sit and wait for more people to view it, won't get all pissed when this site is viewed by alot of people and it takes a few days to get exposed fully. Hopefully someone will know how to fix my problem.

Have patience folks. This is a user forum and if someone knows the answer s/he will help, but that's all there is. Please don't take it for granted this is on a volunteer basis.

DJ Mello, here's my experience on this issue - it's not something you have done. I have the same problem with the PRO/Wireless and other applications system tray icons sometimes on various computers, so I attribute this to a Windows bug and unfortunately I have never seen a fix to this - I couldn't even get a response from Microsoft MVPs on its Windows newgroups. However, an IBM computer we have work with the same problem recently had its RAM doubled and on the first startup with the added memory, the problem mysteriously disappeared. Sometimes, not very often, the problem would appear or disappear on a system crash. Now I am not saying you should go out and double your RAM or try to crash your operating system, it's simply my observations on this issue since Windows XP was launched.

Hey thanks Esquire! I understand that this is a users forum and it's purely on a voluntary basis that people look and respond to posts on here. I didn't mean to sound ignorant or hasteful.

Thanks for your input.

Beleive it or not I brief everyone of these and I just didnt have an answer or even a remote helpful suggestion but I have been trying to look for answers in other forums even though I longer have a notebook to test the solutions out with. Dell's suggestion is to wipe the system clean

I had the same problem

I had the exact same issue while I was using Intel 2915. Switched to Dell 1450 then I no long have this issue. So I can say from my own experience that this is caused by Intel utility.

I'd suggest to use the latest driver/utility from Intel. It might solve the issue.

The major issue is indeed the intel card they ship with the systems which I have no idea why is working out for so many notebook manufactuers. Basicazlly they use the card because they want to keep the Centrino brand logo. Companies like Dell prefer to use there own tested brand cards which offer a lot less heache but of course they still offer customers the option of one of ther ebetter cards as opposed to the cruddy ones intel demands people use.

Have you tried using the beta drivers for your card? Ultimately investing in a 1470 Dell truemobile card makes for a very nice long term use card which runs for about 30 ish at Dell Spare Parts.

I agree with others that you should try switching to another card or reinstalling the utility, but I think there is an easy explanation as to why it appears changing the card can resolve this icon issue.

As far as I can see, the problem can "disappear" if something changes as outlined in my previous reply, but this happens to other Windows XP computers (desktops and notebooks) with other applications too so changing the network adapter and wireless client (i.e., something is being changed) by no means equate to the Intel card and PRO/Wireless being the culprit.

This very problem can happen with Windows XP own icons as well, e.g., Power, Wireless Connection, Safely Remove Hardware, Bluetooth and to other applications on other brand name computers - I have observed the same system tray icon issue with NIS, NAV, AVG, uTorrent, GuildFTPd, and many others to start blaming Windows itself.

I do have the latest driver from Dell's site for my Intel 2915.

I did try going into Taskbar and Start Menu Properties and going into "Taskbar" and then "Customize" and changing the icon to "Always Show". That didn't change anything. Whatever changes I try to make, and I save and apply them it's fine. But once I restart the computer, it goes back to the same problem.

Did I possibly download the wrong driver update? I'll double check on Dells site.

Use the driver on Intel's web site

You may want to use the driver from Intel web site. Its the real latest driver.

Ahh, thanks Tseng, I didn't think of that. I thought Dell's drivers were the proper ones, but I'll check out Intel's site. Never been to their site for drivers, so I hope they are easy to find.

UPDATE: I installed the driver update from Intel's site and it fixed the problem!! The icon stays there when I connect, even after rebooting! Awesome, thanks for all your help everyone!
