Which one it better? 6400 or 6000?

I am cosidering of getting an Inspiron 6000 or 6400. Could any one give me some advice? I will use some 3d drawing software like Pro-Engineer. I am not a gamer. Playing game is not important. I live in Hong Kong. I would like to have following configuration and both 6000 and 6400 are almost the same price:

6000
Pentium 740 (1.73GHz)
With ATI x300 and 128MB RAM
512MB RAM x 1 (533GHz)
60GB UATA HD
15.4" LCD display and resolution 1680 x 1050

6400
Duo Core T2300 (1.66GHZ)
Only Intel GMA 950 with share memory
1GB RAM (512MB x 2, 677GHz)
80GB SATA HD
15.4" LCD display and resolution 1280 x 800

I like the high resolution LCD and X300 in 6000 but there is not option for 6400. Does the X300 helps in 3d Drawing?

id say that the duo will be better for you. but if you can wait you should...the 6400 will have a x1400 in it within weeks.

6000 would be no slouch, but what is the point of buying a 6000 now? i never really understood that.

if i had to choose between a 740 and a duo, it would be hands down duo, no matter if its a 1.66

Thanks. Then I should wait...
Does anyone know how much x1400 cost more than the GMA version?

If we can get an owner of a new 6400 in these forums that is willing to take apart and photo the guys of his machine... alot could be learned.

There should be an option for 1680 x 1050 Truelife on the 6400. At least in a lot of country's. I can really recommend this resolution for 3D drawing, CAD, Photoshop, etc.

1280x800 gives you not enough space in my opinion.

Yes. I want 1680 x1050 TrueLife but I is not available in Hong Kong. I hope to get it together when x1400/x1300 come out.

cfpoon,

The WSXGA screen can be purchased seperately. Check hkinventory.com for warehouse companies in Hong Kong that are selling WSXGA notebook LCD's. Some of them have engineering samples that are usually built better than the final product. You have to search using the manufacture part number though.

Example: "LP171WX2" That is an LG Electronics 17" WXGA+ screen.

Thanks Jax,

You mean that I get an LCD from hkinverotry.com and change the LCD on the notebook by myself?
Yep... replacing the LCD is pretty straightforward. The only issue is compatible parts. Once someone gets an I6400 with a WSXGA screen, ask them to open up the case and give you the part number off of the back of the LCD.

But I still prefer it came with the notebook and I don't need to waste the money on an extra LCD module.

they're selling the I6000 at www.dell.com again

weird

just buy the 6400. its not a real tough call.

you get dual core, and (eventually) a built in gfx solution. FOR THE SAME PRICE.

Yes. I will wait for the x1300/x1400 and the high resolution screen. But hope that won't out of my budget.
What's your budget? (Converted to US$ please)

A 6400D with x1400, WSXGA screen, and Core Duo T2300 should be around 200$ more than a 6400 with Integrated Graphics, Lowest Screen, and Core Duo T2300.

My budget is under US$1300.
But I think it would not enough to get the x1400 but I still prefer to have a 1680 x1050 LCD. Will it have to much work load for the built-in GMA 950?

By the way, I will wait as HK has no E1505 and only have I6400 which has no 1680x1050 LCD option now.
LOL... cfpoon, E1505/I6400 are the same thing. E1505 is a name only used in our consumer market over here... everywhere else (including US Business site) it's called the I6400.

I'm not sure if they give you similar coupons for the HK site, but on the US site the I6400 with T2300 Core Duo, 512meg Ram (1 DIMM), WSXGA, DVD burner, Dell Wireless, 60gig 5400rpm HD, and Intel GMA costs 1100$. The x1400 will be a 100$ upgrade, so that makes it 1200$ before any coupons. Eventually another 250$ off 1099$+ and 500$ off 1499$+ and 750$ off 1999$+ set of coupons are bound to come out here in the US. That would put you at upgrading the HD to 7200rpm and upgrading the RAM to 1gig and using the 500$ off 1499$ coupon to get a very well equipped I6400 for just 1000$.

If you don't have coupons like that on the HK site, then I would say get in bed with an American chick that's over there and have her order one to her parents house for you and ship it over to you. =)

Thanks Jax. But price in HK really higher than US.
It cost me US$1180 for T2300 Core Duo, 1GB (2x512, 1 512 claimed free upgrade), WSXGA, DVD burner, Wireless, 80G 5400rpm HD, GMA 950, 6 cell battery and XP Home(not MCE in US). If I want to change to TrueLife LCD, I need another US$30.
Here in HK, only a US$51 coupon for USD$936+ available.
If x1400 + WUXGA is under a $200 upgrade, it still fits my budget.

I just check out the same configuration in HK and US. Price are USD1166(with all instant saving and coupons) and USD993(with all instant saving) respectively. What a crazy???

I really need to found a American chick here.
Ummm, now you want a WUXGA screen instead of WSXGA?!?! Man, you are getting greedy. LOL

yep....greedy...never enough..
Yes. I think it would be benefit for drawing.
If x1400 really expensive here, I may get Intel GMA with WSXGA. What I am worry is the capability of GMA.
