Which one it better? 6400 or 6000? - Page 2

If you get GMA, get the 667mhz RAM. And make sure you get a 2-DIMM (Dual Channel) config. This will help provide extra bandwidth so the Intel GMA doesn't take away memory bandwidth from the CPU cores. Altho 667mhz RAM will have have slower memory timing that will impact memory performance upto 18%, this is better than the upto 30% memory bandwidth hit that you would take running 667mhz Single Channel or 20% bandwidth hit from running 533mhz Dual Channel.

Thanks Jax.
If I order with x1400, which one would be better? There are 4 options in Hong Kong :
1) 1GB(2x512) 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM
2) 1GB(2x512) 677MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM(+USD 12.8)
3) 1GB(1x1024) 677MHz DDR2 SDRAM (+USD 115)
4) 2GB(2x1024) 677MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM(+USD 410).

I think 2nd option would be the best. 3 may out of budget already and I think it is single channel. 4 would definitely exceed my budget too.

One more question. Do I need XP Professional in order to fully utilize Core Duo CPU? Or XP Home would did the job?
(HK no E1505. Thus, no XP MCE as option)

If you can get the x1400 (and it doesn't use hypermemory or anything like that) then option 1 would be a good choice (should be dual channel.... if for some reason it's not, then it is not a good option). If you go integrated graphics or if the x1400 does use hypermemory (or whatever it gets renamed to), then you should do option 2.
Option 3 would be slower then either option 1 or 2 (single channel, you're correct)

And option 4 would of course rock, but like you said, it's out of budget.

One additional option is getting the memory from someplace else... (not sure if newegg ships to HK, or if there is some other online retailer the would be good out there). That would of course be much cheaper than getting it from dell.

Yes. I think it would be benefit for drawing.
If x1400 really expensive here, I may get Intel GMA with WSXGA. What I am worry is the capability of GMA.
you with think ultra is nice, but itll hurt your eyes soon!

How soon is soon? Cause I've been using WUXGA on a 15.4in laptop since aug 2003, and I'm still loving it....

too bad the ship date's for the 6400 are like 2-3 weeks

If you do wait and get the x1400, then option #1 (533mhz Dual Channel) will have 1066mhz of memory bandwidth (more than enough with dedicated graphics) and faster memory timings than 667mhz RAM.

Thanks for all guys. You all give me so much PROFESSIONAL advice!!
Option 1 for having x1400 and option 2 with Intel GMA.
If not asking question here, I would just choose option 2 as I think higher frequency must be better :P

May be I should do a simulation on my CRT monitor(set similar resolution and with similar size) to see whether I will have problem on the WUXGA.

How about the OS? XP Home will handle Core Duo well or I need XP Pro?

Though I love the 1920x1200 on my 15.4 laptop, there is no way I could tolerate text that size on any crt I've ever seen, so I'm not sure how good of a comparison that will be.

Oh. If text size is too small, I will get a WSXGA that would be good enough for me.

i ask here to do not open another thread

is too much difference between the integrated graaphics (Intel 950) and the Ati X300 128MB??
i'm a Call Of Duty 2 player..........shoul'd i play this game with the integrated one??

EDIT:

I saw yhis review...........Intel GMA950 REALLY SUCKS!!

I Just found it option 1 doesn't mention it is dual channel. I think it would be single channel only. Should I still choose option 1 with x1400?
all core duo's ship dates are pushed to begining of april now.

either A) they are running really low on chips, or B) new stuff is around the corner, causing the shortage.

cfpoon,

Your last question about XP Home is something I'm not sure about. I can't remember why, but I want to say that XP Home doesn't support multiple CPU's/Core's but XP Pro and MCE2005 do.

Don't quote me on this part though.

In Option#1 you said it states 1gig (2x512meg). It will run in Dual Channel mode. With DDR2, 2 sticks of equal capacity from the same style and of the same manufacture operate in Dual Channel. Individual stick Serial Numbers are a thing that was done away with from the switch from DDR1 to DDR2. Now they just register as Make/Model/Size codes. And if the two sticks are same Make/Model/Size, then they will run in Dual Channel.

Stick with Option#1 for the x1400. They probably just forgot to type "Dual Channel" when they wrote the description. If you receive the laptop later down the road and both sticks are not the same, then call Dell and complain.

Right now Intel is becoming overstocked on all CPU's. What I would guess has happened is that Dell used up too many 15.4" screens with their I6000 off-loading sales.

If Dell was running short on Core Duo chips, then the E1705 estimated ship dates would show a longer delay, but they don't.

Noted and thanks. Can I see the both memory modules by taking out a cover door? As I heard someone said that 1 memory module located inside the notebook. We can only change(or see) the module in additional memory bank. Is that true?

If XP Home cannot utilize the second core, what is the point that the manufacturer(not only Dell) include this OS with a Core Duo computer?????

For the 6000 I am fairly confident that both memory sticks are located inside the cover on the back, and there is no need to open up the computer further to take out any RAM. I assume the 6400 would be identical.
