Now this was dumb...

Ok peeps - Powestrip's gone mad!!

I posted a score of 970? Well my CPU was at 270 and DDR was at 190...now how did that happen??

You think there is a conflict between Norton and Powerstrip??

I installed the 6929 drivers and forced DDR and CPU to 182 and 260 and I scored 940.

Marginal improvement there...

Disable Norton and see if it happens again. If it does, then it's not the problem.

Cheers.

tried that too...

I used Norton to check for software conflict and it didnt turn out anything...

Another thing is that each time I boot up it gives me a "New Hardware Found on Bus 1 - video card" message...

I guess the 6929 driver installation didnt go as it should have...checking...

But I got the 970 before 6929 installation...

weird...

With the 6292 drivers, dx9, default clock speeds, I got a 922 on the first test that completed. It completed fine with those drivers, but the default drivers didn't run the benchmark. You need dx9 drivers I guess.

Its ok now!!

Yes!!! It wasnt a conflict with Norton it was a conflict with Norton's Doctor which runs in the background. Each time I turn on Norton Doc the Powerstrip program changes its setting to 270/190.

Well...I did what most people would do - turned Doctor off for good!!!

i'll turn him back on when the need arises. And after that i'll remember to reset the powerstrip settings...

Re-ran 3D Mark with 6292/DX9.0 and CPU/DDR - 260/182 and made 939

So I guess its working fine now - dont get the new hardware found message either.

I've sent a message to Norton - doubtless they'll tell me powerstrip is screwed up.

Lessee...

Results with v6292 drivers:

Ati Radeon M9000 v6292 DX9
Engine clock: 254.00 MHz Memory clock: 172.00 MHz
3DMark2k3 = 894

Better results with 6255 drivers and more flickering with the overclocking.
Im going back with 6255 drivers.

try THESE drivers... it runs on my 8887-x with these. i get about 925 i think in 3DMark03. i dont think these are the same as the new S-Seven, but correct me if im wrong. with the new S-seven ones games would lock up on my after an hour or 2 of playing. but i havent locked up so far with the drivers in the link above.

here it is again http://users.skynet.be/FCB/ati/ati31allradeon.zip
they are from Amodeus i think on this forum.. i got them from a thread he posted

Go default

Rather than rely on the benches I would suggest everyone just use their default drivers as long as they serve the purpose. Once you find that your 'new' favorite game is not playing as well as it should - then you start messing with new drivers.

I am having problems with the 6292 drivers and I am just about to re-install the factory drivers or the 6255 drivers - more likely the factory drivers.

I am trying to find a way to uninstall DX8.0 - anyone have ideas??
you can get a program called DXuninstall or something along those lines. ive had to use it before and it really is a royal pain in the rear. avoid at all costs. anyways, try a search on google for driectx uninstall. you can pretty much hose the system if you screw up...not saying you will, just pointing out the trickiness. i did . good luck.
Make a good backup before trying uninstall the DX. Risky move after all.
Its better the start all over again and reinstall. Good Luck!!!!

Now I am scared !!

Well...i think i'll observe the 6292 for a few days and simultaneously do some reading on DX install/uninstall procedures...

Hee hee i've already installed 'fresh' XP so many times that its not 'fresh' anymore

Lets not make it a once more operation...

I might even begin a profession as the friendly neighborhood OS installer

I'm confused as all hell with these numbers, I thought in the thousands was good.. looking at the avg score around here looks like 920 is good... is there any basemark for the benchmark? What is a poor score, and what is a good one?

confusion

Numbers above 3000 are from the previous benchmark 3d Mark 2001. numbers in the hundreds to 2000 are from the new benchmark, 3dmark 03. for the old benchmark, a good score on a laptop was over 7000. for the new benchmark, a good score is over 900 on a laptop.

And how does that translate into game performance?

will a 900 score more then 30fps in say... Unreal2 at 1024x768x32?

Sorry for the questions but I'm buying a 8887 in a few weeks and want to know what to expect.

Thanks

I don't think you can make that kind of deduction from 3dmark benchmarks. Benchmarks can provide you with an idea of how games will run but I don't think you can convert hard numbers over into games. Actually NVidia thinks the new 3dmark2003 is not a valid benchmark whatsoever

Also some good reading on the 3dmark2003

I wasn't the only one that noticed a ton of alienware ads was i?

I got 1350 on a gf4 4200, i'm not even going to test it on a voodoo3.

I estimate....1/8 of your original score? is normal? I had 10740 with the 2001 one.
