So I was able to find out using the service tag ID from the bottom of the PC. If you go into customer care on dell's site using this ID, it'll tell you what components are used. If their site is correct, mine (WSXGA) is the Samsung.

I do not know which Toshiba screen they use, but on my recently arrived I8600, it says WUXGA, TSHBA, CNXT (Packing list)

TSHBA WUXGA you read.
How does the screen look when the laptop is shut down ? Totally black ?
And how is contrast?
A simple test you can do is display a ramp and check if you see any banding, Tosibas LCD are the only ones I know that can display 16 million colors.

no lcd I know is capable of fully displaying 16.7 million true colors for laptops

DELL-Machina, I must put my two cents worth in here.
I know for a fact both from testing and specifications obtained under pain of death (and the loss of certain intimate body parts) that the SXGA screen in the 8890's can display 16.7 million colours (Sharp LQ160E1LW02 - page 8). I think you will find quite a few laptop LCD's are capable of such a feat. All it requires is a decent set of A/D converters and good LCD chemistry.

Obviously you cannot display all 16.7M colours simultaneously because we don't have that many dots on our LCD's. And don't get confused here about simultaneous either. The true test of 16.7M is the ability to show each shade in a gradient. There is a test image (a PNG) that we were using to find out why some of the 8890's were getting colour banding due to lower spec screens

Difficult to say without comparing to another screen, but I find it quite black when it's shut down, contrast is good.

I didn't find an easy way to produce a testramp, tried the nokia screen test, and with those small bars of colors i can't see any banding, but i believe that's way to few colors (occubies maybe half the screen) to see anything of use.

I have compared the Samsung and the Sharp WUXGA screens in I8600 side by side. First of all, I have to say that both are very nice screen! The Samsung screen looks a bit brighter to me, but there is some slight background glow which makes black look a bit greyish. The Sharp screen has a more shiny surface (which makes it look sharper and more crispy) and excellent contrast. However, it doesn't look completely evenly illuminated when you turn the brightness down a bit, but this is really not very obvious.

I personally prefer the Sharp screen.

Just received Inspiron XPS and notice on start-up and since then a noticable light band about 1 inch from the right side and about 1 inch wide from top to bottom.
Any ideas?

This may be caused by a loose LCD flex cable (the one that connects the LCD to the GPU), so try pulling that out and putting it back in firmly to see if it makes a difference.

If not, then try to reproduce this problem with an external monitor. If the problem shows on the monitor as well, then it is a video card problem, see if you can rectify it with new drivers.

If it doesn't appear on the external monitor then your LCD is probably faulty. If its videocard that can't be fixed by drivers or the LCD thats faulty, call Dell for a replacement of the appropriate part.

Thats the same problem I had with my 8600 screen except it was at the bottom, I saw 2 other screens that had the same problem. This isnt an issue with connections at all, its a faulty screen. Seems like Dell is still putting out these poor quality screens. I think everyone with this problem NEEDS to request a new screen NEW, not refurbished and keep requesting a NEW one untill they give you a good one.

Thanks for the replies on my Inspiron XPS screen issue.
I'm planning on sending it back. I just can't believe they
would send it out the door that way. I don't know what
testing means in their schedule.

Dell could also have ANOTHER shortage of screens so they are putting refurbished ones on the new machines. Thats somthing Dell likes to do.

It shouldnt bother you. Most of the refurb screens are in nearly new condition sometimes you cant tell the difference. besides id rather have a dead pixeless refurb screen then a brand new one on the russian roulette of dead pixels

Getting an exchange

Spoke with Dell Return manager today and they are shipping out a new XPS system in exchange. So hope I get a good display this time.

Well I though I would give my thoughts on the Sharp WUXGA screen that I received with my 8600. The Contrast is great blacks are black the grey scales blend nicely text is sharp and the colors seem bright.
I don’t know if you would call it a problem but it does take a few seconds to “warm up” you don’t notice as much when you turn it on as the boot time allows this to happen but coming out of standby or hibernation the backlight need a couple seconds to even out and come to full brightness. Also when dimmed down more than three notches the contrast suffers a little but I think that’s the same with any screen.

I guess I got lucky I got a good one with none of the issues, and I like it so I see no reason to do anything but stop reading this Board now and go play Far Cry.

See yah when I see yah

The differences are:
First link is to WSXGA display (1680 x 1050)
Second link is to WUXGA display (1920 x 1200)
Third link is to WXGA display (1280 x 800)
They all look good and all should work. Although don't get the last one obviously, as you already have a WXGA display. So your choice really depends upon which you want to upgrade to, the WSXGA or WUXGA.
