No, in the WUXGA the Sharp and Samsung are about the same, some say that the Sharp screen actually has a bit better brightness.... but they are about the same.

Got my second machine in yesterday. Hitachi WSXGA+ with ghosting and leakage as a bonus. The machine works, and I need a laptop, so I will be letting CS to go ahead and put me another one together, but I will take advantage of this one while I've got it.

Apparently you cannot ask for the type of screen you want, and according to a 3rd Tier tech support guy from the U.S. (whoot!) I spoke to today, anyone who is telling you they can specify the brand monitor your getting is trying to get you off the phone.

The gentleman is currently checking for me to see if he can specify a brand of monitor replacement kit.

....And he can. This is what you fella's need to be doing. It will save you so much more time than reordering. Get a tech guy to ship you a Samsung WSXGA+ Replacement Monitor Kit. Mine is on its way! Whoot!

how much does the replacement kit cost you? 3 days ago i ordered a refurb 8600 and i just saw in the product description, shipped a day after i called and cancelled the order, that it has the friggin' hitachi screen on it

are ALL those hitachi screens bad? i really hope this screen isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be... if so, this will be my *3rd* returned notebook to dell... i'm about to give up on them

if i have to ship this one back, 3 strikes you're out dell!

I just looked up my configuration and I have a TOSHIBA WUXGA screen. I'm a newbie with these screens so I'm trying to figure out whats acceptable. There are no dead pixels from what I can see, although I haven't put it through any real tests yet. I'm not sure what to accept as far as light leakage, the very bottom of the screen for instance when playing a DVD seems like its a TOUCH brighter than the rest of the screen. The rest of the screen seems perfect in that respect. Is Toshiba a good brand for this screen? It seems like Samsung and Hitachi are the only screens mentioned so I was bit surprised to see I had a Toshiba. I want to be sure this is a good screen.

does the touch of brightness bother you? if it does can get it exchanged since you have a WUXGA your odds are good on the manufacturers

well... just got my 8600 and we all know what screen it has...... HITACHI!!!! grrrrrrrrrr

love the 8600, much lighter/quieter than the 9100 and the battery life is pretty darn good

check this out... i called to get a screen replacement and the inspiron tech guy kept making me try all this windows crap, safe mode, too much to explain and i kept telling him... IT'S A HARDWARE ISSUE NOT SOFTWARE! ...i told him that several people have had issues with these hitachi screens and have gotten replacements sent to them... after an hour of safe mode stuff, telling me to update the bios(which i did the first thing when it got here), windows stuff, everything else, he finally put me on hold for about 10mins and came back with a return number... they are sending me an airborne express box to ship the system back in to have the screen replaced, dell is paying for it (wowee)... i specifically told the support rep to MAKE NOTE that i want the screen replaced with a samsung and he assured me that he did

i just realized i forgot to tell him to replace with a wsxga samsung, but hopefully they are smart enough to look at the system specs and see this is a hitachi wsxga... i really hope they dont put a wuxga in it, if so, it'll be the 4th send back

anyway.... this screen is pretty bad, just like everyone has said.... ALOT of light leakage on the bottom and the bottom is WAY brighter than the rest of the screen.... the further up u go on the screen, the dimmer it is.... the top is VERY dim, even with the screen @ it's brightest

and blurring when things move..... TERRIBLE!!!

DEATH TO THE HITACHI SCREENS!!!! hehehe

if they send this thing back to me with a different hitachi screen, i'm gonna drive to dell headquarters and open up a can of ass whoop!!!!!

just thought i would share all that with everyone..... so heads up WSXGA buyers! SAMSUNG OR BUST!!!!!!

I'm not sure whats considered "tolerable". Its not bad at all. You hardly notice it when the screen isn't black. In fact on the Quake III install screen, which is bordered by a very thin blue outline, you couldn't notice it at all. But when I actually started Quake it showed up. I'm talking about the title screen now. The gameplay screen obviously you don't see it unless you look at the black thats the letterbox on the side because its a 4:3 game. I don't want to send this back and get one thats worse and find out the hard way I actually had a very good one. I tend to be a perfectionist tho so I'm more anal about minor things than most. Does anyone else have a Toshiba WUXGA here that can comment? Is the screen being slightly brighter at the very bottom a very common thing with these screens? Thanx guys!

I received my i9100 Hita**** WSXGA+ today also light bleading threw at the bottom and a nice big sunburst looking thing in the upper left. Same song and dance from tech support go into to you bios yadda yadda yadda. There sending me a box to ship my system back tried to get them to send me a sammie display and let me install it no go. My so called tech said he would make a note to install a samsung was pretty sure that would happen but couldnt guarantee samsung I told him I get my system back without a Samsung that Im going to return it.

It's crazy to me that Dell would sell such a nice machine and ruin it by putting a junk display other than the display I really like the machine it feels sturdy keyboard is nice my sytem is very quiet I do hope they make it right I really want to keep it but not with this junk display. How can I tell if the new display is a Samsung for sure? Can I check my service tag number like I did for the original display? Sorry about the rant but Im pissed.

DLove23:

I can't comment on Toshiba WUXGA, but I'm definitely anal about minor things (as my wife would confirm). As already mentioned in many other threads, most users don't know what light leakage is until you tell them, and then the anal ones start worring.

The light leakage on my old C840's Sharp UXGA is almost imperceptible, so this used to be a non-issue for me.

However, my daughter wants a 17" or 19" external LCD for her notebook. Being anal, I recently conducted an extensive survey, including some very expensive LCD-s. All of them exhibited light leakages much more pronounced than on my C840, and none of their owners had any complaints (well, some of them may hate me know for point out these deficiencies).

You could run similar comparisons, using monitor testing programs, such as DisplayMate, Nokia monitor test, NEC monitor test, the old but useful CRTAT2 (just google for them), and the Calibrator at

http://www.monitorsdirect.com/toolkit/index.shtml

The caveat, however, is that you will discover that both your screen, as well as practically all external TFT-s, are not that good at the extreme color ranges, as well as middle ones. This is why professional photographers use both LCS-s and CRT-s in their work. But that's another story...

To sum up, I would suggest watching a really interesting DVD to find out whether the slight leakage bothers you under normal conditions. I wouldn't worry about the Windows startup display in a totally dark room.

Thats a great link man. I ran the brightness and contrast test patterns and my monitor looks pretty damn good. VERY slight difference, and I mean slight, with the strip at the very bottom of the screen. The white looked almost uniform too. Just out of curiosity tho, if a screen needs to be returned how long does it take for the exchange to happen(shipping out plus receiving the new unit)?

they told me 2 to 3 business days to recieve the box to ship back and also said it would be another 5 to 7 business days b4 i would get the system back

dunno if that's true, but that's what they told me

I watched a dvd today to make sure and I noticed the leakage problem was a little worse than I had initially thought. I couldn't stop staring at it actually, haha. I called Dell and have insisted that they send over a SAMSUNG screen to install on this computer so I can make sure it works right instead of taking the chance of sending it out and getting it back with a screen thats actually worse. Think I'm doing the right thing here? Whats the history of the newer Samsung WUXGA screens as far as light leakage, ghosting, and dead pixels? Thanx again everyone!

I now find myself a bit disgusted with the quality of screens Dell uses. I just got back from Best Buy and did a little checking out of the 15.4 widescreen laptops they have on display. Not one showed any signs of light leakage. The occasional dimness in the lower corners but no light leakage. This SOB is going back, its official.
post #76 of 97
At Best Buy, they would screen the screens (that sounds weird), so they would only put the ones with the best screens on display, thereby making the laptops appear more apealing.

I just got off the phone with Dell customer service and they are sending a brand new computer in 5-7 days. I requested a Samsung screen so I'll be able to compare the 2 at my home. I had to haggle a little bit with tech support but it all ended up just fine as far as I'm concerned. In fact, having the 2 available side by side is better than I expected!

Two weeks ago i received my laptop with the Hitachi screen , the screen is horrible, the more i use it, the more i hate that laptop. (Currently used for work and school, so basically writing lots of code).

They told me I would get a new Samsung screen the next day. Then I look at order status and it's the wrong screen , I call them back up, says woops, and will have it the next day.. Now it's 2 weeks later there is still no screen here .I've only got a few day's (till thursday) to return the laptop to dell.

Maybe the first page could be edited with a note about the Hitachi WSXGA+ screens (bad Dell ) and how much they really kill the entire laptop experience.

Guess my point was just because they tell you that you'll get a Samsung, doesn't mean you'll actually get one.
(maybe my luck is just crap with these laptops)

how do you tell from an order status page what screen they are shipping to you?

Following extract should answer your question, it is from my "How to tell your display manufacturer" sticky thread.

Quote:
1. The Dell Original Configuration page: *Note: this will ony work for North American customers*
i. Go to Dell support site;
ii. Select Home and Home Office, and on this new page under Customize Support on the left, click Select a System;
iii. On this new page enter your Service tag in the appropriate field and press Go;
iv. Now you will find on the left a new option, Original Configuration, click this and enter you account information as prompted (or create a new account).
v. Congratulations, you should be able to see your full system specs as shipped, including your screen manufacturer.
