Paperman,

The link in my previous post goes to a word doc with the pictures in it. Just go there and download the doc. I am still working on exporting the images as jpg's.

I got my LEGAL copy of Vista Beta 2 earlier this week and i've tried to install it on my laptop (specs in my signature) and come up with 2 errors so far.

Error #1:
When Vista is installing it tells me that my SCSI/RAID Host Controller won't work with Vista. Is there an updated version of the driver for my laptop? I've looked and I can't find it.

Error #2:
After restarting my laptop the first time, i'm told that the installation cannot "access the image file". Whats with that? It's the dvd in the drive .

Assuming that I do successfully resolve the two previously mentioned problems, and knowing that my Intel video chipset doesnt support Aero Glass, what does Vista look like without this? Like XP perhaps?

Xairo

Error 1, your not running a scsi or raid so.... dont worry about it
Error 2, appears you have a corrupt disk so.... Try reburning, but more likely try re-dl'ing it
If u didnt before, use the M$ download agent, like bittorrent I suspect that it has some extra error correction in downloading that the straight dl links dont have and can sometimes fail even on an aparrently successful dl.

3) It looks just like the pics joe posted(Cept those r of old build), caveat: I got aero glass working, so although joe hasnt it is FULLY functional with some reg edits on ur laptop, mind u we both run centrino's not celerons
post #45 of 101
Thanks for replying archalien. joe's pics are of Vista without Aero? Nice^^, what regedits are required to get it to run? I used my own download manager to get the iso, no problems with it. o.O (Download Accelerator Plus)

Edit~:

Well I got Vista installed finally after watching it do its thing for a few hours >_< and its running fine now if a little slow here and there. Though numerous, the UAC popups arent annoying me quite as much as other people have said it does to them. Only have one driver problem at the moment and its the Intel Wireless Connection Agent Miniport "device" in my device manager. So far im connected to the internet fine and I can download things perfectly. So no problems as of yet. (Though CPU usage spikes when I do things like clicking the start menu and minimizing or restoring windows, this is a little annoying when im running a CPU intensive program but its workable as long as I dont try to do too many things at once)

Does anybody know how to get Windows Defender to stop blocking PeerGuardian 2? It wont let PG2 do its thing even though ive told it to allow it.
Dont remeber exactly which ones, it was a special set of like 5-7 edits, but u had to get the right ones-- alot of peeps posted a bucnh of edits that didnt work. I found the correct edits on neowin.net so check that board out.
Well then, I've now got it up an' running, and not running to shabbily either...with Glass? No. Definitely not. And I can't do half as much as I can on XP without it slowing to a crawl. But all in all, I'm impressed thus far.
<<By the way, when doing nothing but surfing an' having MP11 playing, 30% processor, 56% Memory. So much for gaming.>>
Oh, an it isn't liking my old games. I tryed to play skyroads, an' it just froze up the machine. GET SUPPORT FOR DOS GAMES!
But all in all, very nice. And pretty.
I like it too ^_^ i just have a problem with the 3 Windows Search processes using 100% of my CPU for no apparent reason spontaneously. I was watching a video and next thing I know the framerate dropped to almost nothing and when I looked at the task manager those three processes were using 100% of the CPU... quite annoying as you can imagine and theres nothing I know of to do. Microsoft says you can't turn Windows Search off and that you should barely notice them running in the background if at all. Im sorry but I REALLY notice them >_<. Other than that problem im pretty much happy with Vista. Oh and I cant get Windows Defender to uninstall, its not even in the installed program list. o.O

Ram????

Hi,

I have same puppy and this amazes me. Not clear about the system whose specs you offer.....doesn't appear to be your Sentia unless I am wrong. How much memory was in the Sentia when U installed VISTA??????

The specs of the laptop i installed Vista on are in my signature ^_^
post #51 of 101

Way.....

Hey, xairo,

Thanks for info.....now, my puppy same memory as yours, Pentium M 2.00 Ghz.......60 MB HDD........so technically, I ought to totally be able to run VISTA, GIVEN YOU CAN. Apart from Aero, not biggie 4 me anyhow.

BUT I DUNNO NOW.....Am not huge fan of MS and their inherent, unimaginable, dissing clientbase OS & browser flaws ....know that one thing VISTA is supposed to be responding to finally is security....little pathetic that graphics emulate MAC....forget MAC technology had integrity from jump re security.....but objectively, apart from lust for Next New Thing, I like XP, run it in both Sentia and desktop, forget, how many more hotfixes can there be, right?........so I think I should just chill and gather hard data as it comes in.

Also, don't quite get the need or lack thereof for dual core with VISTA, also read somewhere it really wants 2GB of ram 2 B really happy; I could buy second stick,. but.....painful experience is supposed to make you smarter & more cautious right? Again, now see I need to chill on this.

Thanks again,
Jill

PS Re Bugeater's post....pretty (even a la MAC) not enuff; the "slowing to a crawl" part wuz enuff for little Jilly and her little Alien. Can't torture a CPU or any other part of a system.... without consequences.

Ok hold it; just saw your issue with uninstalling W Defender....which even with Uzi to my head I would not go near. I have unearthed most fab little utility I would not be without in any system.....and I do mean little....also FREEEEEEE; amazing, will show up on right click menus and Unlocker can get rid of anything, even those toe fungus thingies on TV. OK, not.

For the really dug in objects, you may need to reboot....wait, I will find & link you...way back once, only this got rid of a gazillion Symanetc files in old system I bought.....and other stuff since in like 4 systems. Wait....

Vista is running fine for me other than the little problems I mentioned though recently they havent been that big of a deal.

Most people that actually have brains dont use IE, just plain sucks. Making it look prettier in the latest version doesnt make me wanna use it anymore than before lol.

oh and on a side note, just happened to notice your username is "Aries"jill is that your sign? Aries is my rising sign, libra is my sign.

Hey....

Hi, xairo,

First, yes, I get impression you like VISTA, and so far, it has not melted your Cely chip or your mobo.....so this is good, right?

Also now clear on specs.....and the possibilities......but also don't want 2 B on autopilot/hostage.

As for IE.....not, I think about brains, but rather individual learning curves and differentail decisions about various elements. Few things are black & white, e.g. I find basic XP graphics insulting and disgusting/vulgar.....so i choose to configure it in both systems running it, Classic Custom.
..and I mean every color and other thing. but see, this is only me. I also do custom wallpapers using MS Paint...or else I am not happy.....so I am total nutcase, OK?

I am AOL subcriber, whole cottage industry=dissing AOL.....but given all they have evolved, I think they are now high end ISP. Also, their software loads IE....and once you get THE THOUSAND HOLES PATCHED.....IT'S NOT TERRIBLE BROWSER......it's the contempt MS shows for its hostage client base....via infinite assets for anti trust battles.... re the HOLES in the first place I am disgusted by.

Finally, yes, have Sun & Venus conjunct in Aries in the 8th, Virgo rising, Moon in Cancer and grand trine in water. Sorry you asked, right????

This science (astrology) waaaaaaaaay more complex and singular in wut it can bring than any populist version....also more complex even than our PCs....though I have two fab softwares for running accurate math and I luv them.

Again, will keep open mind re VISTA......but want to make informed decisions.

REGARDS TO YOUR ALIEN.....FROM MINE...AND BY THE way, recently bought a nice and affordable aluminum Bytecc USB (duh) cooling pad .....did not like temps above 50C......all newer notebooks, forget these little Sentias.....too much stuff jammed into to miniscule space....even if 2.5 HDD made 2 withstand more heat.....we know our mobos in these don't even have names, and many have failed....see, Virgo rising describes nit picking and caution.....sometimes. Aries rising more leap in the moment ORIENTED....LIKE NOT ALWAYS MEANT TO LOOK FIRST, RIGHT?

But gotta say, the cooling pad works....so makes me feel bettah. Small investment, and, I think, intelligent one....but would luv any feedback from others who R using these. Maybe only lappy owners with Virgo rising, who knows?

I think I got most of what you said lol. I bought a laptop cooler for mine as well, has 2 fans and sits under the laptop. Im amazed at how hot my sentia gets (just as much before I installed Vista). If it got too much more hot i'd be afraid of the inner parts of the laptop being damaged. Quite odd, a friend of mine was shocked it was getting so hot (he's a computer technician) and suggested that I get this cooler that I have and so far the cooler has lowered the temperature of my laptop considerably. Now its just warm whereas before I could almost cook eggs on it lol.

Hi.

First, Gambler Guy.....WUT? Are U playing or serious. Hard 2 tell from like 3 words.

Next, xairo,
So interested to hear about YOUR COOLING pad. Huge enemy of all puters, forget notebooks, forget the smaller, the bigger the enemy....is heat.

I knew Sentia was too hot for comfort, then downloaded utility to monitor......and while many laptops can withstand high 50s, even way more.....it's not good for the system, no way.
Shortens the life....who wants this????? (OK, maybe Alienware repair, right?)

So I am very happy you have the pad .....and very happy I DO AS WELL, & thanks for sharing.

Interesting that most PC lappy makers call them laptops....when, using them on lap worst thing we can do.....and that IBM Thinkpads.....are never called laptops by IBM........for obvious reasons.

Cool=GOOD.......Cool not about the blue eyes.....cool=LITERAL.And yes, I still worry about exactly to what extent VISTA WILL STRESS THE SYSTEM.....making for more heat.

THOUGH I was also told that Celeron CHIPS RUN COOLER than Pentium, but Jilly not exactly some EXPERT.

Hope this isn't confusing, am little tired.

My pad was $24 at Best Buy, works like a charm. Your right about this Sentia not being a "laptop" in the sense of how it was designed. Come on, I could have designed the cooling system better. The only fan on this laptop is on the right and its in the exact spot where the laptop would touch my leg were I to be using it like a "true laptop". Mostly it sits on the cooler in front of me on my desk with my desktop pc monitor just above and behind it. I keep the temp in my house around 75 so that should help out a bit, considering how much electronics and such that I have giving off so much heat. (3 external harddrives, desktop pc, laptop, 2 monitors, desktop lamp, router, cable modem, tv, fan, phone, sound system, power backup, powerstrips) yeah..lot of heat. Vista shouldnt hurt the physical system, besides even if it did by the time you have any problems, you'll most likely be ready to get rid of it and upgrade due to it being outdated. So, I wouldn't worry about that aspect. ^^ Not that i'm an expert either, but just in my experience, thats my opinion.

Hi, again

Hey....

1) You bet....laptop NOT. BUT NOT EVEN THE BIGGER LAPPYS ARE! Because market wants lighter, thinner.....so who could put fans anywhere but on bottom?

2) I first bought plastic, 3 fan cooling pad from eBay. It was OK. Then decided I should have gone aluminum, so got this Bytecc one from Newegg. Totally trust them; it also has second USB port which is nice....but am knocked out by anyone owning relatively new lappy who doesn't go there. Also got my Alien an amazing and not teeny---do we like, GET infant hands when using USB mousey for lappy? NO. aND I HAVE SKINNY HANDS....BUT NOT INFANT......got it this blue led optical mousey.....blue LED matches eyes. Way cool. O! I will attach a pic!!!!! OK, just uploaded 2.....mousey also comes with red LED, but you should nevah do that to an Alien.

3) But see, I am one of those humans who resents expensive hardware made to last 11 minutes. Also, am not a gamer, so given my applications, and like many people in the world, I honestly don't think I will need more than this level CPU or more than 1GB or ram.....have slightly faster P4 CPU in desktop......but unless someone is into gaming.....how much speed do we need?????? For real? Another reason I am now cautious about VISTA, ok?so....

4)..... I try to take amazing care of my systems....because I want them to last. Desktop is Optiplex....made for small businesses, solid like a rock. Would I luv dual core? Do I look stupid? But common.......so many bells & whistles, (but dual core Real Deal)...made to generate sales.

5) Your setup sounds like mine.....too much STUFF. Including, U bet, surge protector. Not power strip...SURGE PROTECTOR.

6) For anyone out there reading this...I learned that when I am mainly using the Alien not mobile.....to fully charge the battery and REMOVE IT. THIS EXTENDS ITs LIFE BIGTIME.

Not to think of our machines as Kleenex, OK? The less we do, the better they will have 2 make them.
