Laptop SATA connector vs 3.5 inch sata: Same?

Hi, any possibility of connecting a 3.5 inch sata drive to the Laptop sata connector?

Is it the same conenctor? If not, can i get a convertor?

Are the power consumption the same?

If not i could probably power the 3.5 inch sata externally and then conncet it to the lappy?
This would be awesome if it could be done..

I could ocnnect my 250 gb 7200 WD to my laptop and it'd seriously kick ass!!!

I dont mind having the HDD outside the PC...

LOOKS LIKE THEY'RE THE SAME!!!

Im gonna try hooking up my 250 GB 7200 WD SATA...
But im gonna conector the power cable to something more powerful...

not sure if the lappy can provide enuff juice...

Ideally, i wanna get a sata 3.5 external enclusure, and then i can swop the 2.5 inch drive / 3.5 external as and when i please...

Can u say 60mb/s speeds on ur e1705???

Do you know that the E1705 has expresscard/54, so you can get an eSATA II ExpressCard like this:

Or one of these for an External Raid 0 or 1:

all are SATAII, and NCQ. Think of the possibilities.

This is why having an ExpressCard/54 slot is important. Hard drive capacity has always been the weak link in notebooks. Video and multimedia are other possibilities.

I am sure the data side of it would work, because sata 2.5 and sata 3.5 connections are the same.

However, the power from the notebook wouldnt not be enough to power the 3.5" so you would need an external power source for it.

that is a really neat idea

oh and don't they make external power cables for sata drives? you could use that

yup.. eventually, i'll just make a slide in slide out thingy so i can connect the 3.5 inch in easily...

but i realized, i need a FEMALE to MALE sata cable.. which i just bought online for 10 bucks...

Wow, gota check out the Express card links mang... but would i be able to boot from them?

wow ok checked out the SIIGs. they are SWEET!! RAID ON LAPPY???? AWESOME!!

but i doubt u'd be able to boot from the drives, which kinda defeats the purpose...

All SATA drives use a universal connector across all SATA models (SATA 150 or SATAII) and platforms (Desktop, Laptop, Tablet, Portable Media Player).

If you want to put your 250gig in some type of container is the rear end exposed you could use regular SATA power and data connectors to plug into the opening left behind from removing your internal hard drive.

The only problem you will encounter is the difficult task of trying to plug those cables into the laptop's hard drive slot as it's quite thin and doesn't leave alot of room for maneuvering.
