I had problems getting an external microphone to work on my 8887 laptop. I tried everything you guys said to try on the forums and unfortunatly... it didn't work. I poked around for a long while and I finally got it to work. So I hope this helps those of you who still haven't gotten it to work.
First, you do need the Y-splitter for your SP/DIF and your microphone plugged in the farthest jack from you.
Plug in your microphone into the splitter.
Go into volume control, Options, Properties, select Recording, make sure Microphone is selected, click OK, and make sure it is the device selected for recording. (NOTE: You may want to slide the slider for it to max).
Also, click Advanced for the microphone and make sure the Mic2 Select is not selected.
Goto your control panel and open up "Sounds and Audio Devices" in XP.
Click on the "Voice" tab and then "Test hardware..." at the bottom.
The computer will do it's thing and then come up with a screen with two sliders. One for microphone and one for speakers. Blow into your external mic and see if it is working (should registar on the color bar).
If you click next, you will be able to speak and hear what is coming out through the speakers. (NOTE: If it sounds weak, goto into your volume control, Options, Properties, select Recording, make sure Microphone is selected, click OK, then click on Advanced where the microphone slider is, then click Mic Boost. That should help it.
That is how I got mine to work. I hope this helps some of you.
If my directions are unclear or you have any problems, I'll try to see if I can help you.
