External Mic on 8887 - Fixer

I had problems getting an external microphone to work on my 8887 laptop. I tried everything you guys said to try on the forums and unfortunatly... it didn't work. I poked around for a long while and I finally got it to work. So I hope this helps those of you who still haven't gotten it to work.

First, you do need the Y-splitter for your SP/DIF and your microphone plugged in the farthest jack from you.

Plug in your microphone into the splitter.

Go into volume control, Options, Properties, select Recording, make sure Microphone is selected, click OK, and make sure it is the device selected for recording. (NOTE: You may want to slide the slider for it to max).

Also, click Advanced for the microphone and make sure the Mic2 Select is not selected.

Goto your control panel and open up "Sounds and Audio Devices" in XP.

Click on the "Voice" tab and then "Test hardware..." at the bottom.

The computer will do it's thing and then come up with a screen with two sliders. One for microphone and one for speakers. Blow into your external mic and see if it is working (should registar on the color bar).

If you click next, you will be able to speak and hear what is coming out through the speakers. (NOTE: If it sounds weak, goto into your volume control, Options, Properties, select Recording, make sure Microphone is selected, click OK, then click on Advanced where the microphone slider is, then click Mic Boost. That should help it.

That is how I got mine to work. I hope this helps some of you.

If my directions are unclear or you have any problems, I'll try to see if I can help you.

I did basically the same thing but without the y-splitter. I don't think its necessary.

Also, make sure the S/PDIV is muted in Volume/Playback or you'll get a lot of background noise. Its a good idea to try both the Mic Boost for Mic and/or Loudness for Volume Control under advanced.

However, if you try it without the y-splitter and it doesn't work, try the y-splitter.

Yeah, what he said. I think if you just do the Test Hardware thing that it makes a big difference.

I just noticed a lot of people not getting thier mics to work and all the forums ended with the problem unsolved. I figured this would help.

FYI, I couldn't get mine to work, found HolyKami's suggestions (thanks), and now all is fine. It wouldn't work without the splitter, and I hadn't thought to try it.

thanx for posting. I got mine working w/ y spliter, but also enabled spdif in bios.
Other side of y spliter to premium digital coax to z680's trashed stock speaker wire
for 1/8" flat monster wire. Thanxs again for your clear simple post
