LCD bad for programming :(

Hi, i got a pretty nice LCD, but i realize no matter what, it can't compare with my desktop LCD for coding.

I get a headache after about 2-3hours... even when the fontsize is pumped up.

The moment i switch to the 17 inch lcd, headache goes away.

Games and movies are good tho....

But i spend more time coding than entertainment..

Is it the contrast level?

Have you tried a white on black text instead of black on white?

It could be a matte vs glossy thing. I stll find the matte Samsung on my old 9200 to be easier to look at for text than these new glossy LCDs. But for movies and gaming, glossy wins.

Sorry 'bout intruding into this thread, but:
Try out ClearType. It's supposed to help.

^Did you use the Cleartype Tuner tool? Just turning it on to its defaults can give bad results...

im with this guy, but i think its more the wide-screen effect more than the resolution. did you ever consider that? i love the wsxga size, but i feel the aspect ratio is hard on everyones eyes.

i think it the glossy thing too...i know when i used my aunt laptop who recently got a glossy screen for about an hour i had a headache, it looked nice but i could not use it for long periods of time

i dont have the glossy, and i get the headaches.

ive seen glossy i don thtink thats it.

maybe someone could start a poll and see what everyone says makes their heads hurt. id vote!

my eyes have adjusted quite a lot in the last year to the 1680x1050. i tihkn most if not all of us grew up on square 4:3 monitors, so its changed now, and change hurts.

I'm not sure if widescreen is the issue. If it was, then wouldn't people developing on multi-monitor systems have the same issue?

I've moved from single CRT to single LCD to dual LCD and my biggest problem was during the CRT to LCD move. I had to swap everything from black on white to white on black because the white would be so glaring.

Single LCD to dual LCD wasn't as hard - I've done long sessions where the window was stretched across both monitors with no issues.

That's just my experience, of course, YMMV.

hmm lemme try white on blackcoding... i'll up date u with results!!

i used to think it would be worse (coz black on white is more natural, like real paper), but if white on black solves the problems, i'll do it!

Back to MS DOS days.. lolz..

My biggest thing for holding to Matte or High Gloss polarizers is the fact that High Gloss is an screen WITHOUT a Matte Polarizer... not replaced with a High Gloss polarizer. Matte polarizers are installed to prevent reflective glare inside the LCD/Backlight assembly. I prefer knowing that my screen is more readable in more environments than a "high gloss" screen. And I can't justify paying MORE for them to give me a screen without internal glare protection.

And if anyone wants to bring up companies that offer High Gloss on screens for additional money... they aren't pulling the screen apart. Proper maintenance of the internal layers of an LCD would tear the layers apart. So they put an "external" polarizer on the outer glass. This now makes the glare and reflection worse as there is now light getting trapped inside the glass between the LCD and the external polarizer.

I don't live in a dark cave without any light bulbs... so high gloss is annoying to me more than it is a benefit. =)

Probably cause the laptop lcd runs at 60Hz as opposed to 70-75 for most desktop lcd's.

That's weird, you're suppose to have less eye strain on a LCD vs a CRT.
Could it be that notebook lcd is usually not at eye level. Where lcd monitor you can adjust up and down.

i think its just the small font thats is causing the strain in general.
i switched to 1440x900 resolution, and my eyes feel a lot better, EVEN tho its fuzzy coz its no native resolution..

maybe i shd have gotten the wxga+ since i play less games than do coding..
