Dell has a reputation it cant shake...

tehy buy alienware not for the production facility, but for the loyal customer base, brand image, distribution channels, etc.

Think abt how much dell could earn, if they bought over the entire AW operation, and integrated with with their own ULTRA streamlined "make to order just in time" logistics processes.

They'd probably be able to make AW quality stuff, at 50% of the manufacturing cost. They could probably even afford to drop AW prices by 25% and still turn a huge profit. This would be awesome for EVERYONE! Then they could apply AW's cool image to all the existing dell gaming product lines.... have a "Powererd by alienware" stickers etc..

even more awesome shiz mang....

dell shd buy them out asap.

I for one, will NEVER understand how Dell Vs. Alienware seems to arise in every conversation, and the same people do nothing but try to downplay Dell, and rave over AW. Someone else on the AW section is ripping Dell apart, and even went as far as saying "Dell couldnt beat AW at gaming if it wanted to."

REALITY my friend. Dell can do WHATEVER IT WANTS. ITS GOT BILLIONS of PUBLICLY REPORTED DOLLARS.

The ONLY, only, only only, reason Dell hasn't decided to open a factory and hire a specific team of 100 computer techs to create the most insane gaming line ever is because they CANT JUSTIFY IT to the SHAREHOLDERS. The PERCENTAGE of money that comes from $5000 dollar GAMING computers is SO minimal than what comes from selling 2 million Dell 4600's at 1000 a pop, or supplying GE capital with servers for international offices. Why do we have a very good performing, yet not as flashy as it could be XPS line, CAUSE THE PEOPLE DECIDING THESE THINGS ARE GETTING PAID $1-2 MILLION A YEAR and know better. THEREFORE we get a GREAT gaming system at a GREAT PRICE that keeps customers floating around Dell. If you buy an XPS once, you're likely to GO BACK TO DELL For monitors, laptop for work..etc..its just another hook.

I'm so tired of this argument. Its ABOUT MONEY. GOD FORBID someone who plays Battlefield 2 gets high enough in the Dell company for his own good and releases some insane gaming line at 40% off with water cooling that ships in 3 days and has a 4 year OVERNIGHT service WARRANTY for $177 bucks.

And one OTHER point...what is this talk about crap hardware? I have an ATI X800 XT, a real intel P4 EE, and WD raptors...The XPS 600 has an Nvidia Nforce SLI mobo with unlocked BIOS. AND im NOT even saying AW doesnt offer GREAT hardware, because they sure do, including awesome BFG overclock video cards, but PLEASE...stop making this 4 year old claim everytime we wanna put Dell down. It's such a joke.

I'll say I think AW systems are great, always have, always wanted to have one. I may even go that route for my next one to finally have those glowing eyes. But please...cut the nonsense.

AND THAT my friends, is the reality.

This debate is much hotter in the AW section for some reason.
the info has a skanky source.
the debate is pretty much a joke.

you just did a total flip flop commish.
you went from the 'cheap dell' point of view
to the 'dell can build the best if it wants to'

Dell does a dam good job at what it does.
no one can argue that Dell is an american success story.

Maybe because every time you come into the AW section, you're telling us all how we want a Dell...? Do I really need to explain to you why this is an issue in a string about Dell supposedly buying out Alienware? Sure, Dell could build systems like Alienware, so why don't they? You can bet companies like Alienware were worried when Dell first announced the XPS line, but for some reason most people don't see the XPS as an equal to machines from smaller companies like Alienware and boutique system builders. For some reason...

Then why don't they put Alienware out of business?

So now it's the shareholders that are stopping Dell from building quality high performance rigs? LOL! You're one of the only die hard Dell fans Commish. Most people buy them due to pricing. You get quite a bit for the price from Dell, but a lot of power users aren't only interested in the bottom line. Seems Alienware is making pretty good money in the gaming sector...

Again, since you apparently know Michael Dell and what motivates him, why do you think they're not doing that now? You think the shareholders won't let him? With Michael Dell's wealth, he could start a new company under a separate name and hold it privately and build rigs like Alienware. No shareholders to "hold him back"... So why doesn't he?

Why do you care so much? If you're happy with your Dell, what's the problem? Is your 'memory' bad? What kind of motherboard do you have in your system? What kind of memory? Will Dell tell you who makes their hardware? Do you have to use Dell only drivers for any of your hardware?

You've been saying this as long as you've been posting in the AW section, but you still don't own an Alienware. Why is that? I even remember a time where you told us all you'd ordered one. You told everyone in the AW section that we'd all want an XPS too if it were water cooled and offered SLI, but I don't see many people moving to Dell after they've owned an Alienware. Does Dell offer SLI yet?

It's your reality Commish, too bad most everyone else sees these things differently. Dell does what Dell does. They're successful at it. They've tried to jump into the gaming sector and it hasn't worked out like they'd hoped. Just accept you get a functional computer at Dell for a low price, but if you want the kind of hardware Alienware and other manufacturers use, the care and attention to build details and great support, you have to pay for it.

Why is it you guys think Dell would sell the same quality systems that Alienware does for 50% off? The way Dell makes it's money is to design systems to a price point. You can't do that and succeed with the kind of hardware gaming system manufacturers use, even if you're Dell. If they could do that, why haven't they yet?

Dell quality is far superior to any other computer company with possible execptions of Sony and Apple. Those other companies you speak of with the "hot hardware" don't offer "quality systems," they offer big cards and CPUs in a flashy case. I'm sure plenty of ppl from both sides would agree that the same could be said for alienware. It's all about what you want to spend your money on, quality or raw performance.

Business = money. This is such a rediculous argument, the fact that you're trying to argue that AW isn't really in it for the money just goes to show that you have been won over by their marketing scheme to make ppl like you think they care sooo much. They're just offering you what you want to buy and YOU BUY IT.

Alienware is MARKETING (that means making money) to people who want to think they are part of an exclusive group, fighting against the evil empire of mainstream computers. It's acutually a brilliant plan, seeing the fierce loyalty AW customers have.

Because the market for people who spend rediculous amounts of money on computers obviously hasn't been deemed large enough to interest Dell... Untill now maybe considering the rumors. To say that Dell is incapable of offering superior gaming machines is madness, you said yourself Dell has billions and could do whatever they want. There are probably some bean counters within the company who are red-taping a really kick-ass machine, but once again it's A BUSINESS, and a business will do what it deems to be most profitable.

Umm...what are you smoking? All notebooks are measured quality-wise against the ThinkPad. Apple is nichey & Sony is stylish...neither of which equates to quality.
what the heck is all the argueing about? does what one person thinks affect you so much? does saying dell is good, aw is bad, make you not enjoy your aw....or vice versa. geez....

do you research, buy what you want and enjoy the damn thing. forget this arguing
post #35 of 61
Well you got most of this right. IBM, Apple, and Dell make quality laptops; apple is rated the highest. Read PC Mags annual survey from laptop owners. Sony is not rated too highly tho.

That was a decent post Hammer...somewhat respectful. I never said I ordered one. I considered them both for a few months before going with the XPS. And yes, I agree that AW has awesome retail hardware.

My next computer could be an Alienware...but I don't know for sure. I don't like to buy a computer and keep it for 4-5 years, I like to turn it over as often as possible, and always be somewhat up to date. This is why the XPS makes so much sense to me.

As I said, just to try it, I'd love an Alien. The problem is I've gotta spend 3 grand to get anythigng worth buying from them, and thats not even nearly loaded.

I will for one, make the argument though...that Dell does NOT see the gaming market as a lucrative sector. What do you think? Do you think Dell actually is willing to invest money in a market where 1% of computer buyers exist?

The bottom line is AW = cool gaming system Dell = high specs for cheap price

It's very similar to Corvette C-6 Z06 and Ferrari F355. Z06 is 505 hp Chevrolet for $65k, and the 525 HP Ferrari will run you 150k. Which makes more financial sense? But which is cooler to own...exactly.

A good example on the Dell side is the warranty replacements being free and shipped overnight. For instance, my X800 XT is acting up, and dropping the signal during heavy 3d gaming as of lately. It also did it last week while I was doing email. So when I call XPS support, they will likely have me run a diag, then ship me an X850 XT or whatever is the replacement they have available at the time.

holy crap...where's sakor1 and DM? could use some help w/ the potential fuel for flames haha

and I would have to agree w/ alliaskary77
post #40 of 61
probably everyone can agree with alliaskary77.
but its funner to put a stick under someones toenail and light it on fire.
has Dell Machina been around? havent noticed him in the forums.
