!!!!!!HELP!!!!!!! 5720 Artifacts

Thread Starter
My 5720 is about two weeks old. This morning when I woke up, the screen was full of artifacts, which change patters/symbols with different images:

They start the moment the screen lights up, so I think its a hardware problem, not software. I requested a callback from Sager...

Any thoughts on what this might be?

You should put this in the Support forums...this is general topics...

anyway, try booting into safe mode and unistalling/reinstalling your nvidia drivers

No one reads the support forums...

Well if you bought it from PCTorque that's exactly where they look to help people.

This is probably going to be moved there anyway...it clutters the forums. Best of luck.

If it was a software problem, artifacts would only apear when the Windows XP loading bar shows up.. That Sager logo appears right when the computer boots up..

I think the connector to the screen is either broken, dirty, os not correctly monted (maybe you shaked the laptop and it came off a little)

RMA it, now dont wait. Thats not software, when windows is loading its also loading the video driver. Run, dont walk to your local shipper and send it back!

Yeah, I will overnight it tomorrow and hopefully get it back on Fri

BTW, I am typing this in Safe Mode with the scren covered with the damn artifacts. If I leave the lapto alone for an hour, it will boot up fine and the artifacts will start popping up after 15-20 seconds in Windows. If I leave it for 4 hours, I can use it for about a minute before it artifacts...seems to be a linear relationship between the time the comp is off and how long before the artifacts show up....weird

Sounds like a GPU overheating issue...take a can of compressed air to the input ducts on the laptop. If you're OK for the first few seconds of boot up it could be the GPU hasn't warmed up enough to cause the artifacts yet. 15-20 seconds into windows sounds about right for a seized GPU fan or major blockage

GPU is bad, it's not overhearting, simply a bad GPU.

try taking the gpu out and putting it back, or just plain rma

if it was software POST wouldnt have artifacts

I had the similar issue with mine, but i found out that it was the 1Gig RAM Module in Bank #1. I removed it and it´s working fine since then.
After that i put this one in Bank #1 and removed Bank #2 and it worked Ok for ~1 1/2 hour. After that the Artefacts came up again.
I checked the Module with Memtest86 and it reported many errors.

Unlucky as i am i bought it via ebay and couldn´t return it anymore.

So i´ve to buy another one.

A friend had a problem just like this with his Toshiba notebook. I discovered that it was both an overheating issue and some kind of bad connection. I could tap his computer in the right place (just above the GPU) and the display would mess up more.

I sent it in to Sager for service and got it back a couple days later (overnight shipping both ways). They replced the video card and it's all good now..
