I'm orderind a dell notebook E1705
but I need an advise on Hard Disk
what's the difference between 100GB 5400 and 60GB 7200?
on Dell web site both have 8mb Buffer cache size and thanks

5400 rpm verses 7200 rpm

The 7200 is a faster drive.

If the price is similar, I say go for the 100GB, 5400rpm HDD. On a notebook, 5400 RPM is good enough and it will lower the heat output and battery drainage as well.

Basically speed. it's the how many times the disc spins around.

if you have the extra money i would say 7200rpm, but personally i dont see much difference so only go for the upgrade if necessary

I would prefer more space over speed, but that's just me.

The difference in speed is marginal since the 100GB has a huge read-cache. Get the 100 MB and I'll bet you won't notice the speed difference but have 67% more capacity.

isn't the cache between a 100gb and a 60gb the same?

The fact that the 5400 RPM drive is bigger really cuts down on the difference in speed to begin with, and you get more space. IMO the only way I'd go with a 7200 RPM drive is if I can afford a 100+GB one. Otherwise, a 60GB drive really doesn't offer much of an advantage over a 100GB 5400 RPM drive.

get the 100gig, 7200 rpm one. I did.

My 9400 is still no way near as responsive as my desktop machine 3500+ with a 74gig raptor. Its like night and day. For this reason alone I cant give up my desktop and move to lappys full time.
